I don't know.
All we know of him are from books written by others (Plato being the most famous). How do we know that he actually existed rather than being a fictional character used to explain Plato's philosophical ideas? We do not.
But I guess because Aristotle said "I will not allow the Athenians to sin twice against philosophy" when he fled, clearly referencing Socrates, it can be assumed that he believed him to be a real person.
As Aristotle was the student of Plato and Plato supposedly the student of Socrates, it is unlikely that Aristotle would have thought him a real person (as he clearly did) if he in fact was not.
