...if we are capable, should we try to subjugate it?
Bear with me here. If we come across alien life, and we are at a technological stage where we are the superior ones, should we subjugate them?
Is peaceful coexistence even possible?
I would say that it depends on their psychology, culture and their forms of morality and ethics. If they have no respect or empathy for other forms of life, hold beliefs such as viewing genocide as acceptable or have some fanatical master race ideal that seems likely to impact their interaction with other sentient species, then it might be a good idea to make sure they can't ever cause us trouble in the future. Even then though, I think that any such decision regarding what we would do should be taken when they are about to achieve large scale viable space travel like us, in this scenario. If they are hostile and have a seemingly dangerous psychology but also in a sort of primitive, medieval state like we were, I'd say we should just leave them be for now. They might change like we did in many ways. If they don't, and seem likely to carry their hostile and rather dangerous attitudes into space then I would say maybe. Perhaps first finding ways to test their reaction to us and/or other sentient lifeforms in ways that we can control to settle the issue on what should be done with them.
If they are more or less amiable, then I see no reason why we should or would subjugate them.
