So start right now today and risk furiousness for bliss.

The new technology created by scientists at Reaction Engines can cool air entering an engine from 1,000C to -150C in a hundredth of a second without creating icy blockages.

This would allow a jet engine to run safely at much higher power than is currently possible without overheating, meaning it could reach speeds of more than 2,000mph.

Technology is amazing! This could revolutionize air and space travel. Jets could travel over 2 times faster than they currently can using this new engine technology.

Only problem is that they have to build a whole new engine which would make it hard to integrate it into commercial travel very quickly.

Discuss this awesome invention.

iPhone 4S 64GB Black.

Has been all over Sky News for the past few days. I hope it becomes a reality.

Sounds like the beginning of an artificial Dementor.

This is pretty sweet. Long flights suck balls

No signature found? Well that's odd!

We've had this for many, many years. It's called a Ramjet.

It looks retarded. I hate it.

That's just an artist's rendition. The engine could be put on any jet.

Wait so it travels 2x as fast as a normal jet engine yet manages to travel a 24 hour journey in 4 hours. That's hardly twice as fast, more like 6x as fast.

"Wake me...when you need me."

I won't be impressed until they develop a slipspace drive.

lolno

OT: maybe this can allow for a less costly space program

Could an A320 withstand those speeds? Could an A380 even withstand those speeds? It's not designed to go that fast, is it?

How's the fuel efficiency?

I would assume they would have to redesign passenger aircrafts to be able to withstand those speeds, if they wanted to implement it into commercial travel.

Es ist Zeit für einige Gefahr-pay

This is also rather misleading- he even says in the article that it would take an entire redesign and even then- maybe 10% of flights would have it.

  • 11.30.2012 11:03 AM PDT

But how efficient it is? That's what matters to air travel companies.

  • 11.30.2012 11:04 AM PDT

ooga booga boooh

So, let me get this straight: at the moment, the metal exists, but the actual plane does not. So this is all hypothetical that we could create something aerodynamic enough?

Sounds sick!

It would be really handy for online shopping, and for shipping companies.

While this is nice I still will not be getting on a plane.

Reminds me of that passenger jet that could go to low orbit back in, I believe, the Reagan era. I can't think of the name at the moment. This ringing a bell with anyone?
