You're like a slinky. Good for nothing, but you bring a smile to my face when I push you down the stairs.

My ankle got crushed by a car.

Only idiots cut themselves on purpose.
I don't see why you would say that if in the end there is no serious damage.

Y'know, other than scarring and mental side effects.
Scars and varying mental complications. Key word is varying.

So...

you can leave now.

This thread makes me happy in a way for the flood, there seems to be a lot of positive response and the OP is doing a great job.

Although I never self-harmed through some of the rough times I completely rationalize the escape it offers for people. In-fact, my girlfriend used to cut herself, in the beginning of our relationship she lied about the scars, saying her cats caused them from jumping out of her arms like that. That day that she told me the real reason behind the scares was a day I will never forget. She had stopped cutting before our relationship started and hadn't during it. I remember the look in her eyes when she told me the truth. She cried and I just held her, sitting there for what felt like an hour before either of us said anything.

Good people hurt themselves every day, it's a tragic situation that I wish more people would be open to.

Or a degrading mental state.

Have you any knowledge about the most prime human instincts?

Self-harm violates the biggest one- indicative of a degrading mental state.

the only thing philosophical about this thread is mister math.

Used to cut, on my thigh. Was great at first, but cutting hurts, so I began to anticipate the cut too much. This yielded unsatisfying results, so I then attempted to compensate for this anticipation, and this caused me to screw up big time. Haven't done it since.

  • 12.01.2012 11:03 AM PDT

I know everything, I've just forgotten most of it.

Also, my XBL Gamertag is 'Wenggh', not 'A Stolen Fruit'.

Never intentionally!

Which would that be?

And are you insisting that actions contrary to primal instinct is inherently a sign of negative mental state?

Do you really have to ask that? The body is driven by self preservation.

So you are stating that all examples of human thought and activity that does not immediately serve that instinct is inherently indicative of poor mental state and any of these actions should be avoided as such? Surely you see how short-sighted that is.

So I suppose that riding roller coasters and watching scary movies are signs of poor mental state?

Mate, that is the way the world runs- humans are driven by two things:

1) Self-preservation
2) Self-interest

activity that does not immediately serve that instinct is inherently indicative of poor mental state and any of these actions should be avoided as such?

Yes, don't believe me?

Ask a person who studies human behaviour.

None of those go against self-preservation.

Do you know what we are even talking about?

  • 12.01.2012 11:14 AM PDT

TRU7H. CARNAGE. BUNGIE

I have never inflicted intentional harm on myself.

I have never understood why people do that. It's just idiotic in my opinion..

  • 12.01.2012 11:15 AM PDT

People are just animals, and animals are basically meant to stay alive. Yes, it can be argued that self sacrifice could be beneficial for the better of others. But it's situational. But the body tries not to let itself get hurt from an outside force (like flinching or bracing for an impact), so there is obviously some degradation when the body harms itself.

...surely you are not serious...

It's obvious to me that you do not understand the concept in the slightest.

If you would like to know more, I would recommend speaking with a professional of human behaviour and how the brain works.

No.

You don't understand my point.
You state that purposely inflicting pain to stimulate the mind is bad because it goes against self-preservation. However, fear, which has the same function as pain, is not bad to purposely bring upon one's self. You gave no real reason as to why you do not apply the same standards to similar ideas. And what of people who endanger themselves for collective self-preservation? Are they not equally as unstable? You are completely inconsistent.

Self-preservation is the human behavior towards survival. Pain and fear are mechanisms that help avoid dangerous situations. However, you have to explain how stimulating these senses for "fun" is bad when there is not danger present. Because neither endanger the subject's life.
