"Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone." - Colossians 4:6

So Flood, I've been thinking about what I want to pick as a career because I'm tired of sweeping floors and busing tables, and since I've always wanted to fly, I've thought about joining the Army to fly helicopters for them.
Any advice?
If not, what do you think of Army helicopter pilots?

You need good ones. Math and physics is the way to go.

I remember trying to fly helicopters in Battlefield...

What I'm saying is, I hope you don't die due to your own piloting incompetence/ineptitude.

I'm not sure how easy it is to be able to be a pilot for the army, but I would assume that you would have to be pretty elite to do that. However, if you can successfully get your license and ratings that you need, there are a lot of civilian jobs that demand a good pilot. In fact, helicopter pilots are in more of a demand than airplane pilots.

Youre pretty much right about the elite part but it is not easy at all. Not anyone can decide to become a pilot and actually become one. Specially for the military. Things I do know is that you have to be incredibly smart specially with math, perfect vision, minimum height, the field is very competitive, and you will most likely fail.

I graduated high school about three years ago. What do my grades have to do with my ability to learn what the Army teaches?

Flying a complicated aircraft requires very intensive mathematical knowledge. When it comes time to plot your route, you have to know a lot about vectors, trigonometry and geometry. There's also a lot you'll need to learn about aircraft navigation, like VORs, DMEs, ILS, Nav waypoints, NDBs etc etc. You'll also need to know a lot about the relationship between knots (the aviation unit of speed) and nautical miles. You'll need to be able to roughly predict your trajectory in flight if you are ascending or descending to a certain altitude. I could keep going on and on, but the point is that there is a LOT of math involved.

Well here in Australia it's highly recommended the individual has top marks in maths and physics. It will just be harder for a person with low marks in those areas to get selected. If they have flight experience though it should be easy.

  • 12.01.2012 12:29 AM PDT

You have to have perfect vision to fly in the Army. I would suggest going to college and trying your best to get the grades and knowledge you need to even apply. When you go to a recruitment tests you will undergo one or two medical exams. One of them will be physical and the other is mental, unless they changed procedure in a month from whence I talked to them. After that you will go to an Army base to get trained if you pass the medical exams. Then you have to pass training and afterwards you will be a pilot.

In Australia you need good grades to do any sort of complicated job, like piloting, engineering, tanking, repairs or whatever. You need good grades in hospitality class to be a cook for the army.

I dunno how it is in America, but I do know that when you train to be an attack heli pilot they teach you how to use your eyes independent of each other.

You know those HUD monocles they wear? You need to be able to focus one eye on that while using the other eye to focus on everything else.

It's -blam!- true and it takes months of practice.

Tell me how you see through this, then.

I should clarify that you don't need to be able to do this before you sign up, but it's one of the things they teach you.

For a few years it has been my goal to fly helicopters in The Australian Army.

  • 12.01.2012 1:05 AM PDT

Gamers don't die, they just go offline.

"...and the fanboys will unite to slay the Call of Duty threat for the greater good of gaming."

The vision limit in the Army is 20/50 but it needs to be correctable to 20/20. If your vision is not 20/20 and you're nearsighted then get CRT contact lenses. You wear them in your sleep and they prevent your vision from deteriorating. I have them right now so my eyes don't get worse than 20/70 (USAF's cutoff limit, yeah I'm trying to be a USAF pilot, my backup is being a Developmental Engineer).

Other than that, be as fit as possible and get the best GPA (at least above 3.0) as you can in college to look good in front of your ROTC superiors. Then again you only need a high school to be an army pilot so you might not need to go to college. Having a college degree might increase your chances of getting selected for a flight slot in the Army though.

Also, have a backup job in the Army in case your pilot plans fall through. Also get a flight physical before you sign any contracts to see if you could actually qualify for flight duty in the Army. The same goes for your eyesight.

Also, if anyone and the OP is interested, the minimum vision requirements for pilots for all branches of the US Military.

USAF: 20/70, needs to be correctable to 20/20.
US Navy: 20/40, needs to be correctable to 20/20
US Army: 20/50
USMC: 20/40, needs to be correctable to 20/20.

Yeah, also if you need laser eye surgery (preferably PRK, not lasik) to correct your vision to 20/20, talk with a recruiter or your ROTC superiors to see if its okay. This applies for all branches besides the Army, the Army is a lot more strict on vision surgery than other branches. I'm not too sure if the Army allows vision correction surgery but the army may provide them for free. You'll have to talk with a recruiter on that.

Yeah the Military favors PRK surgery over Lasik also because PRK is more reliable when it comes to preventing further deterioration of eyesight after surgery.
