Both of these films are generally considered the best Batman films made by their directors.
But which of these two are better, in your opinion? For me, it definitely has to be the Dark Knight.
Every Character is better in TDK than in Batman. Batman himself is better portrayed, the Joker is better, Commissioner Gordon is much, much better ("We have to save Dent, I have to save dent" is one of the best lines in the movie) and so is Alfred.
As for the story? Again, TDK is much better. It's much more thought it, and not as cliche. In Batman it was just "Bad guy does bad stuff because he's bad" whereas in The Dark Knight, the Joker had a true purpose, to spread Anarchy and to show that even the best of people can turn bad. Much relating to the comic "The killing Joke" (And the people who say Heath's joker is nothing like the Comic joker are wrong because of this. lolsuck it)
The music? Again, I feel that TDK is better. Yes, Batman's (1989) theme is pretty awesome, but the theme for the TDK is just so much more epic.
tl;dr TDK > Batman (1989) in my opinion
