"It's Afghanistanimation!"

Many of you guys know that I have a huge nut about this game. I cannot stop talking about it for an extended period of time like I do Bioshock. This game has just done so much more than simply deliver a grand story. It made you realize reasons why you play shooters and it examines the genre as a whole all while taking you into a deep heart of darkness that leaves you questioning your own sanity.

This two part Extra Credits video goes really in depth about how well it does.
part 1. NO SPOILERS
Part 2. SPOILER HEAVY

The game goes as far as the break the 4th wall and talk directly to you! Later in the game when ever you get yourself killed for what ever reason, the loading screens will say things like "how many Americans have you killed today?" or "Dont worry, you are still a good person."

Things like that are ideas that can evolve the way we see stories in games. It is something unique and fresh that truly deserves recognition!

Sure, it's a great game, but it lacks replayability.
That's the only thing that keeps me from buying the game.

Believe me when I say, that it does have replayability. Especially when you find out what is really happening! You notice things that you did not see before and it makes you feel even more disturbed than the last.

its story was good, but it failed completely as a shooter. I played the demo, gun play was not tight at all, and the shooting mechanics as a whole were poorly executed.

1. Half-Life 2
2. Mass Effect 3
3. Mass Effect 2
4. Tie between Halo 3 and CoD4
5. Medal of Honor or Spec Ops: The Line

Which was part of the point. To seem like a crappy everyday shooter. Which is one of the points made in the video.

So they Purposely made the game's controls -blam!-? Quality development right there.

OT:Played demo, felt underwhelmed. Might pick it up for ~$10-20.

The demo is made to give you the impression that it is another shooter, only to turn that around when you play the real game. The games controls function and get the job done. They embraced it with what little funding they had.

OP I love you. I feel the same way about this game. It sucked me in and I couldn't put it down until I finished it. The story is so entrancing, so deep, I wish people would look past the game play mechanics and enjoy this game for what it is, it's introspective story telling. Truly dark. It's been a long time since a game gave me so many wtf-jaw-dropping moments.

Eh, I played Spec Ops the Line. It had really good ideas, but they were executed pretty poorly.

It was fun playing the incredibly bad and amoral soldier in the game though. Some of the choices are so needlessly -blam!--ish that you can't not laugh at it.

The gameplay combines the worst parts of the PSP SOCOM games with Gears of War

A cornered fox is more dangerous than a jackal.

And from FOX, two phantoms were born.

I thought the purpose of a demo was to make you want to get the full game.

It can be for other reasons. It still was to maintain that feelig when you play the full game.

It's not a CoD clone. I think CoD clones are what draws people in because when I saw Spec Ops, I said, "Third person? No thanks." Then, when I saw Warfighter, I said, "Gee, this looks cool" (I played the previous one and thought the singleplayer would be good). Oh, how I was wrong.

All in all, I'm really glad I got this game, even if the replay value is not through the roof.

It's only worth buying if you can get it really cheap. Steam has it for like $5 or $10 on Sale sometimes

Yeah, but sadly I'm on console, so I don't have that liberty. But still, a good game is a good game and sometimes is worth forking up some cash. Plus, I did wait for the price to drop down to $40.

  • 12.01.2012 11:29 AM PDT

i guess bad gameplay and a refreshing-but-still-not-particularly-well-done narrative is enough to hail a game as genius. the line's story and characters were a nice surprise, but it's nowhere near a great game.

Again, this. There were so many moments during the campaign that I was just like "oh. my. god." I would find myself sitting there after a cut scene just staring at the screen like "did that just -blam!- happen?" (The white phosphorous mortar sequence always sticks out)

As far as control mechanics; I don't think they are that bad, certainly they could have been better but I feel they were solid and did the job.

My troll sense is tingling.

It's one of the few games where everything serves the story. The mechanics, the level design, the art direction, it uses them all to full effect.

It's pretty much the first true drama of gaming, and was an incredibly daring project for the developers. That alone deserves recognition as they push the medium forward.

  • 12.01.2012 12:11 PM PDT

The game was astoundingly good. It deserved much more recognition.

Indeed it was. I wonder how they indeed got 2K to ok the project.
