I've never actually put a new hard drive in a computer before and I've hit a few snags. I just bought a Samsung SSD 830 series and am trying to get it to work in my laptop. I don't want to even bother switching all of my memory over and just want to start out fresh, I installed Windows 7 on it successfully.

The first snag I'm not sure if it's the SSD or if all hard drives do this when first installed, but my laptop will be missing basic drivers such as my network drivers so I can't get online. To solve this I used an MP3 player to get the network drives on the SSD, it actually worked and I got online.

The next snag is when I go to install the updates for Windows 7 it downloads and installs them fine, but when it goes to apply the updates during the restart it has problems and I can not get it to start back up again. Every time I try it blue screens and says driver power failure or something of that sort.

I appreciate any help and will provide any more information as needed. I'm a complete noob at this.

Heavy weighs the crown, low hangs the head who wears it.

Drivers are in the OS domain, a HDD is just storage.

The error you get when restarting, does it say drive power failure? Is the drive in place correctly?

I'm pretty sure it does say drive power failure. The SSD is definitely in correctly.

Does the BIOS register the drive? (usually something like enter or del or F10 after POST time to access it)

Yes, it's recognized. I am using a pirated version of Windows 7 after I lost my original CD, though, I've never experienced this problem when I've reformatted my previous hard drives. I'm not sure why the network drivers aren't there after Windows 7 is installed.

Have you tried booting a live linux distro and mounting the drive? Does fdisk see it?

I'm going to be honest and admit I have no idea what any of that is hahaha! This is just a bit over my head, I think I'm just going to send this thing back. Thanks for the help though.

1: Don't send the drive back.
2: Just take all the data from the old hard disk, and put it on the new one. My idea. I have no idea how one would do that, however.
3: Linux Distro=Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, etc. Much better than windows, in my opinion. They are all free downloads, and can be booted directly from a CD or USB drive without installing anything from the Hard Drive.

I'm not sure how I can do that, would I need to purchase something?

I don't know either. Read the edit.
If there is ever something on the internet that you don't know, use the google. Life will be so much better for you if you follow that one simple, common sense rule.

Have you tried using a Magnet on it to calibrate the data?

Really? Whenever I switch my hard drives, I always have to redownload drivers from another computer.

That's what I'm saying. The HDD is just storage space, it doesn't come with anything. Drivers are (usually) kernel modules that you install into the OS, which resides on the HDD.
