Subject: Should you really be considered an adult at age 18?

T4R

Honestly some people really shouldn't be as they are not ready to make adult decisions at that age. But then again you don't want to punish those who are ready to do so.

If I had to choose though I think I'd move it up to 20 or 21. By doing so though I'd assume you'd have to increase the legal age of alot of things like marriage and buying tobacco and enlisting in the military and other things like that.

That's my 2 cents. What do you think Flood?

I'm an 18 year old and feel nowhere near qualified enough to be an adult. That said, I know how to work and look after myself.

You tell me. I'm just a stupid kid.

The Internet is an empowerment tool that's agnostic; it doesn't care about race, gender, or age.

I agree to some extent, but at the same time. Some people are more mature than others.

There are people who aren't ready to make adult decisions all their life, OP. Think about it for a second.

I think that if the drinking age is going to remain at 21 in the US then they should move adult age to 21 as well. Making the adult age 18 while the drinking age is 21 doesn't make any sense and makes for second class citizens.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

It is a bit foolish to think that the "Maturity Fairy" arrives on the night of everyone's 18th birthday and magically bestows them with adulthood.

*shrug* what are you going to do? Require a license and make people take an exam?

No. I consider you an adult at 21. Which is why 21 is the drinking age in most places.

Certain places charge adult prices when you're not even 18.

For example: 16 years olds are charged adult prices on trains, same with Theme parks, some even as young as 14.

Check this out dude.
Alcohol is a drug, mkay? A drug that adversely affects the developing mind. I have yet to find any studies on the effect of alcohol on the development of the brain between the ages of 16 to 21, but prior to the age of sixteen it has been shown to have harmful effects. After the age of 21 or so the consumption of alcohol has been shown to be good for you if done in light or moderate amounts.
Maturity has nothing to do with it. If you'd like the government to stop trying to look out for your safety in this matter, write to your congressman.

And I object to your use of the title "second class citizens".

Of course, it's as arbitrary a point as any, the fact is that there are people who are 40 and are still too immature to be an adult, likewise there are 14 year olds who are wise beyond their years, so all you can really do is pick a random number and hope that's about right, the truth is it doesn't really matter.
