Subject: Your thoughts on public shaming

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

OK, I've seen a few news stories of late of judges publicly shaming people, in lieu of penal punishments. That is, the person has to sit or stand at the location of the crime, holding a sign stating that they are an idiot, and what they did.

Personally, I am all for this. It saves money, and I think (without any evidence) that it will have a better impact on recidivism.

Your thoughts?

I don't think this will work.

It depends on the person, but I think that it would hinder some crime. And cheap, too!

I'm torn, the disintegrative justice you're proposing would certanly punish those who need to be punished, but countried with Reintegrative justice systems (Such as Japan) show lower levels of repeat offences...

Though what you're saying does sound more efficient.

But some people would be proud of it

I'm not proposing this, its being done.

Someone posted a story about some woman that drove on the sidewalk to avoid stopping for a schoolbus. She did it so often that eventually the cops put a sting out to catch her. When she was sentenced, the judge made her sit at the sidewalk she did it at with a big sign that said: "I am an idiot. I drove on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus" or something to that effect. There was another woman who had it done when she stole from WalMart.

So if I kill someone in a dark alley, my punishment would be to stand in a dark alley where no one will see me for a little while?

Idea could use some work.

Generalizations.
Helping idiots hate other idiots since people have existed.

Let's try it and see what happens.

We won't know unless we experiment.

I'm all for a good ol' fashioned tar n' feathering.

*sigh*

This is why sometimes I hate coming on here, too many kids who post without thinking.

OK, it would not be on big crimes. Obviously, violent crimes, grand theft etc... would be punished normally. Its the small stuff, like traffic violations, or shoplifting.

Marley: next time try to be a little for inconspicuous.
John: What do you mean?
Marley: John, we grow lots of gear, right?
John: Yeah loads...
Marley: So try not to come back with a wasted girl and a packet of fertilizer!

The idea of a punishment is that it helps to stop the person from acting out again. With this in mind, many people with low self-esteem (indeed this may be the reason for committing the crime) won't benefit at all from this and way well be spurred on to further action.

I can only see this working for teenagers, frankly.

The human element always mucks things up.

It wouldn't work for me. I'd just dance around and say "Hey lady, I stole from this store WOOOOOOO -blam!- YOUUUUUUUUU!"

Finally, a well reasoned response. Take note Thomas.

I see this working well in the states. Its unfortunate, but people here tend to be over-concerned with their public image. I think that many would rather serve jail-time anonymously than be shamed in public for even a day.

I absolutely and utterly hate this type of punishment. If you stand in the place of crime and the place of crime is a black ghetto and you have a -blam!- sign around your -blam!- neck stating that you were there in early hours of the money screaming your -blam!- head off that you hate black people, then I'm sure you'll get stabbed to death real quickly.

I think that they might as well just get sentenced to execution instead seeing as that's effectively what they're doing.

That would make it one hell of a deterrent from screaming that you hate black people...

Just sayin...

Though, to be serious, for you to be sentenced to that, then you would have had to been right there screaming that. The shaming happens at the place of the crime.

Now, why did you choose that particular example? Planning on doing some shouting?

I'm just saying that under certain circumstances the place of crime could be a potentially unsafe place to be and one could get stabbed whilst there...

Well, to be fair, to be sentenced to that location, for that crime, you already demonstrated that you are willing to offend that group. I mean, you were in the ghetto yelling that you hated black people...

Carpe Diem - Carpe Coffee

Astronomy Picture of the Day!

I'm on the fence about it. I think it would definitely be an effective punishment for preventing repeat offenders of petty crimes. The only thing I'd be worried about is if/when the public outcry becomes violent. Everybody loves a good witch hunt, and forcing someone to stay in the public eye under those conditions is pretty comparable to stoning in a lot of ways.

As was said earlier, there would have to be a defined line as to what crimes would be eligible for this sort of punishment for it to not end up being cruel and unusual. I honestly have no clue as where that line would be drawn seeing how erratic mob mentality can be.

1. You're an idiot if you commit a crime in a "black ghetto" in the "Early hours".

2. You're an idiot if you yell racial epithets in aforementioned area.

3. If your punishment is to stand in the aforementioned area, talking about your crime, it will be during daylight hours, most likely in a well trafficked area, thus minimizing (if there was any) risk of being stabbed to death.

4. Jumping all the way to execution from a public shaming is downright idiotic.

5. Public shaming tends to fit the crime.

6. Has anyone been convicted of the crime of being in a "black ghetto" in the "early hours" for "screaming your -blam!- head off that you hate black people"?

7. Your "certainty" that someone'll get stabbed to death real quickly shows your ignorance of ghetto areas and the people living in them.

So far its only being used on petty crimes. The woman who drove on the sidewalk, and the shoplifter at WalMart.

I wouldn't mind seeing deadbeat dads and people who tried to buy drugs from undercover cops added to the list. Likewise johns who tried to buy a prostitute.
