I really dislike how unfaithful to the books the movies are. The first 20 minutes into FotR I can spot out at least 20 things that are wrong. Entire sections that were memorable in the books (Tom Bombadil, the Shire being taken over by Saruman, etc.) are missing. I understand some changes are practical, a necessity changing from book to movie, but some of the things that were changed would have had no negative effect on the movie if they had stayed true to the book. They should have split each book into two parts, turning the trilogy into a hexalogy, hopefully preserving the integrity of the book while also allowing it to be an enjoyable and kickass movie.
But aside from all that, I still enjoy watching the movies from time to time. I mean, come on. They're awesome.
Please tell me you are joking. Yes PJ changed/omitted some things in the movies (especially TTT and RotK) but it was all for the best. Tom Bombadil is an ultimately pointless character that is only mentioned once (in passing) after his appearance, the Barrow-Wight stuff is again pointless, and the Scouring of the Shire is the definition of a tack on ending. Having Saruman show up as a crime boss ruling over the Shine was and always will be incredibly stupid. The WHOLE POINT OF THE ENTIRE TRILOGY WAS TO STOP THE EVIL FROM GETTING TO THE SHINE, AND AFTER DEFEATING MORDOR WHAT HAPPENS? EVIL SEEPS IN ANYWAY BUT IS DEFEATED AGAIN. Its -blam!- pointless -blam!- that didn't work in the book and wouldn't work in the movie.
I will be the first one to admit that Tolkien was not the best story teller. The man was a genius when it came to fictional histories etc. and descriptions but by God are the characters in the books stilted and underdeveloped (the appendices do not count). Not to mention the pacing of the books is all over the place. With the films PJ took all the essential things from the books and converted them into a flowing narrative that was fit for the big screen.
I can tell you right now that a movie that followed the books to a tee would be horrible.
