Gather around the campfire, once it goes out, it's out for good.

If you ask me, it'd probably be a better plan to focus on education and psychology instead of merely making them comfortable. But I suppose they have plenty of rehabilitation programs, so this comment is pointless.

Switch that to the US and it's a pretty relevant comment.

Because in Europe, everyone has human rights.
Right, because rapists, murderers, and thieves deserve to live in luxury

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

Within the context of prisons, yeah, that is pretty -blam!- luxurious. Everybody skipped over my first post here, so I am gonna say it again. The guy that killed 77 people is staying in a nicer place than I used to live.

They don't deserve -blam!-.

But short of putting a bullet through their head, or locking them up till they die of old age etc. This is a much better solution for all involved.

Offenders go back to become helpful and productive members of society, prison save money in the long run due to very low return rates.

They are?

As far as prisons go, they really are.
Here's Fox News using that to piss off us Americans.

Their prison cells are nicer than my room and the gyms they have > the gyms at my school. wtf -_-

And? Find a better place to live.

Prisons, in Norway, are not meant to be hell on earth. They are a place where criminals are rehabilitated and prepped for re-release back into society.

Its a different mentality that works very well for them. Norway has one of the lowest crime and recidivism rates in the Western World. They are doing something right. Most criminals only see that prison once.

Can we stop to recognize that Scandinavia has many other factors that may change its crime rates, such as education.

Regardless of your personal feelings on this, it's obvious that they handle crime much better than we do in the U.S. Programs in general that rely on punishment rather than rehabilitation are idiotic and only hurt everyone.

Okay, everything is basically flying over this guys head.
Not at all.

You guys seem to think that the US system is the standard, and are offended that other countries do things differently. You have been railing on and on about how criminals live out their sentences "in 5 star luxury hotels" while citizens on the outside live below that.

Which is odd, since so far only one of you actually lives in Norway.

No, I understand quite well. I am, and will continue to point out that we have no right to condemn another country's system. Especially since it works better than ours.

I did, I am living at home and I have to commute to Aptos now.

Well, I was pretty right when I said everyone skipped my post. I said I don't think they should be hell holes, but I also don't think they should be nicer than what a college student can afford on Minimum wage.

Its a different mentality that works very well for them. Norway has one of the lowest crime and recidivism rates in the Western World. They are doing something right. Most criminals only see that prison once.

When most of their crime is in one city, Oslo, and most of it isn't violent crime besides the high number of -blam!- assaults, it has more thievery than a city 8x larger than it is (New York) the crime rate is going to be low. You don't have much trouble reforming guys who probably stole something so they could get 3 square a day and a cot. Or in this case, TV, a computer, soft beds and large cells.

I'm talking about more than prisons. I'm talking about the mentality of the society they exist in. Education plays a massive part in this.

The real problem is the WE allow our college students to exist at a level below that of prisons in Norway, and not the other way around.

Or maybe the fact that their quality of live in general is better contributes to that. You seem to be unable to look at more than one variable.

Yes, because I clearly said that these so called "luxury prisons" are the only thing responsible for the differences. Or not.

I said they handle crime better, which is demonstrably true. Recidivism is much lower, and you can argue how much of that is due to its prisons, but what's not arguable is that programs that focus on rehabilitation are better than ones that focus on punishment, consequently you can say that Norway handles crime better than the U.S.

Think of it like this:

I could be homeless. I kill someone. I now have a nice bed, toilet, TV, computer, and hot meals everyday until my sentence ends

or

Just compare it to a normal prison

Stop trying to divert to my situation with school, it isn't even the point. I didn't kill 77 people. I don't want the bastard drawn and quartered, but I don't want him to be in a place with a better quality of living than most people in the world have.

So they should change their entire system for the imprisonment of one guy?

You must be correct, since Norway has the highest murder rate, just so people can stay in these luxury prisons. Its like a waiting list. They are just turning away murderers just because they want to get inside and live the easy life.
