BOOM Headshot!

I ran into it today and it seems like and excellent idea, cloud gaming that is. How I dont know anyone who uses it or even knows about it for that matter?

Ignore my gamertag. It's actually Dragonzzilla.

Because the Flood is packed with nostalgic bastards who despise the very essence of change.

What is onlive?

The black wind begins to blow... Okay... give me your best shot... If you're prepared for the void!

Cloud gaming?

What's gonna happen when my internet is down?

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

Two words:

Input. Lag.

Cloud gaming is wonderful in a number of ways, especially the concept of games that are designed for the cloud. But having the whole game in the cloud is not a good thing, and OnLive does not implement it particularly well anyway.

Okay so from what I understand, its a subscription service, that supplies games to you through the cloud, thus requiring no powerful hardware. And you can use it on devices like your laptop, their little tv box thing, and your tablet (hell yeah). Except the only problem is of course you must have internet.

Yeah that seems like it could be a problem. I just ran into it today, so I havent researched it all the much. The only other place I heard about it from was that it was gonna be on Ouya

Multiplayer gaming will be impossible due to the massive amount of bandwidth required for OnLive.

The best way to do cloud gaming is to have gamers download a basic engine to their own console/PC, and then have them stream maps/art/the world/other information from the cloud. Thus, no input lag and laser-fast control responses, like we're used to, but with the added benefit of (for all practical purpose) unlimited storage space for developers to truly create the world that they want without limitations.

I honestly think this is the future of gaming.

Chances of being able to play Onlive smoothly (from what I hear) is the chances of being able to play smoothly in FF/Spartan Ops in Halo. As in, not high chances at all. Maybe 50% of the time? 50% is an F.

This. They essentially render each frame, and send the rendered frames to you.

So they are essentially sending you images at 30-60 hertz ( frames per second )

lets look at the ammount of data this requires.

first lets just assume that we are playing in 720p ( 1280x720 )

almost all games render the finished frame to an image in the format R8G8B8A8 ( 8 bits for red, green, blue and alpha )

this means that every pixel takes up 32 bits of information.

doesn't seem like alot right?

1280x720 is 921600 total pixels.

which equals 29491200 bits

which is the same as 3686400 bytes

which is the same as 3686.4 kilobytes

which is the same as 3.6864 megabytes

So 3.6 megabytes of data per frame.

at 60 frames per second that is 216 megabytes per second.

12.96 gigabytes per minute...

etc. its just crazy.

But you would still be limited by the client machine?

Remember those times when we all had something better to be doing, but didn't do it? Those were good times. Gooood times

Awesome concept.
Can not be carried out with modern technology.

I work at OnLive on the engineering team and I'm also an avid PC/Console gamer.

Cloud gaming currently meets the needs of some types of gamers. People who can't afford big beefy boxes, people who are mobile on the road away from their consoles, and those that like the convenience of being able to play the same game and the same game saves regardless of your computer.

Cloud gaming does have a lot of challenges though and lag/latency is definitely one of them, but it's getting easier to address all the time. Keep in mind that a lot of current gen LCD TVs add ~45ms of latency just in the TV. As these things get better and the networks get better I think we'll see cloud gaming become a more accepted method of gaming and it's clearly on the roadmaps for Sony, Microsoft, etc. Just look at the Sony-Gaikai acquisition.

Oh, and regarding multi-player, the way our cloud gaming works, it actually doesn't matter how many people are playing. Your particular local client/internet connection is never taxed because the rendering/multiplayer logic is all done in the cloud.

Thanks,
John Speck
