Subject: The Halo engine and Destiny.

We know that Bungie could not retain any rights to Halo pretty much, but what about the engine itself? It's not like some other engines that can be liscensed to use in games, it's exclusive to Halo.

But is there a special case for Bungie? Or did they have to make an entirely new engine from scratch? I think the Halo engine would be fairly good. I'm not sure how it'd hold up to MMO esque features, but as for looks, gameplay, and efficiency it's great.

I think Bungie probably just wrote the whole thing from scratch. They said they were making a new game, and I don't think the Halo engine constitutes a new game. That, and the amount of time they have been dark also makes it seem like they spent some time working on a brand new engine.

2/15/12: Francisco Porras, I'll miss you. Rest in Peace.

I thought they were using the Reach engine as a base for Destiny. I don't remember where I read that though.

I read somewhere that they're using the Reach engine.

I would think they would start from the ground up. Especially if they're accommodating for the next-gen consoles.

Didn't they build the engines for the Halo games anyway?

They'll just use the IW engine.

  • 12.02.2012 4:00 AM PDT

Per Audacia Ad Astra!

They said they're using a new engine, but i'm sure they're using Reach engine retooled...

Making a new engine from scratch take so much time, and we know they prototyped Destiny with Halo engine so...

Isn't Halo engine modified Havok?

So you're going to continue building your own engines and tech?
Yeah and I think it goes hand-in-hand with our independent spirit. Just like we don't want to develop a game off someone else's IP, we want to push our own technology in the same way. That's going to be our position for the foreseeable future

Are you working on your own new engine right now?
Yeah, it's actually in development, so I would say it's in a stage where, technically we're still at the end of a pre-production mode. But now that Reach is done the full weight of our team is rolling into the project. Real work is underway.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

"I would kill to get a killionaire... 10 times... digitally."

I'm willing to bet it's written from scratch. Bungie's a top notch AAA developer making a brand new franchise, I doubt they would reuse an old engine.

I don't know pretty much anything about making game engines, but I'd imagine it's more feasible to strip something down to it's bare bones than make all the basic functions and such by yourself...

Let's just say both MS and Bungie get to have a "copy" of the Halo engine Bungie made. Anything developed or expanded on that engine post-Reach belongs to Bungie and Bungie alone. That's not to say Bungie isn't making a new game engine, but really no one ever starts from scratch.

This is correct. It takes an entire company many years to create an entirely new engine... "creating a new engine" for Bungie is more like stripping down a car and renovating it. The car's body is the same, but now you have a better spark plug, and your wheels have spinners, and the electrical system is better.

They have said in the past that they are future proofing their Engine for the next wave of consoles.

Destiny sounds really ambitious...
Using the IW Engine doesn't :)

That's just a world/landscape editor/creator, not an engine.

I hope they made a new engine.

To say that any game company would rebuild any engine completely from scratch is just not feasible. There are some pieces that just can't get any faster/better and rewriting those pieces just to call them new wouldn't be smart.

At the same time different priorities for an engine sometimes require remaking a module. For example let say your making a game that always happens at the same time of day. Then it might save a ton of time to just bake all the lighting into the textures - and you'd write your lighting/texturing engine to make that look as good as possible. But lets say instead you decided it was very important that the game had a day/night cycle - well then you'd probably sacrifice your texture resources to develop a great dynamic lighting model.

Again though in both these cases your texture/lighting loading code would probably be very similar and be optimized in very similar ways so you wouldn't have to rewrite that at all.
