You can even tell that Bungie thought that Reach's firefight was a joke from the Achievements they made for it. ODST's Achievements took a little thought and effort and perhaps a few good friends in order to acquire. Reach's Achievements were a test to see if you could discover the option that gave you bottomless clips, invunerabillity, instant shot kills, and a Plasma Repeater.

Death to rank junkies.

The enemy AI sicked.
The maps sucked.
Lagged much more than ODST.

Reach's is unquestionably better. The only issue with Reach's MM Firefight was that it was just shooting fish in a barrel.

Why do you care so much OP? Why does it matter what other people like/prefer? You are making a big deal out of absolutely nothing. Let people have their own opinions. If they think ODST is better than Reach for firefight, who cares? If you like Reach more than ODST who cares? Let people have their own opinions there is no need to shove yours down everyone's throat.

I personally don't like Firefight at all.

  • 12.02.2012 11:03 AM PDT

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

Armour Abilities. As long as these are in Halo, Firefight just can't be good. In Reach, they're a core part of the gameplay - the golden triangle becoming a tin quadrilateral. Disabling these just makes the experience so unnatural, even the Classic Slayer gametypes in Matchmaking just felt wrong without AAs.

In ODST, the only equipment you get to rely on is the occasional Bubble Shield a Brute threw down before you killed him.

Also, maps. All of them are terrible in Reach, the exception being Installation 04. Crater, Lost Platoon, Chasm Ten, the Marathon-inspired Last Exit, Security Zone... pretty much every map except for Windward was great. Cruising around with Choppers on Heroic with 3 of your friends was fun because the game was so vehicle-friendly, the dumbing down of vehicular combat in Reach just didn't work.

Custom options ruined Firefight. Every game was a Jetpack-fest with unlimited lives and Rockets that had infinite ammo. Yeah, you could customise the rules to a more ODST-style type of gameplay, but please do tell me exactly how many private Firefight matches any of you played with friends... It just wasn't the same, Commendations also played a part in making FF worse because all people did was grind for more cR. ODST had the benefit of rewarding you nothing beyond an Achievement and a pretty skull on Bungie.net.

Because ODST Firefight is superior in just about everything Reach had minus customization. Better atmosphere, better maps, more challenging while still being fun. Jacking up the enemy health or making a boss round all Heretic Snipers in Reach's doesn't make it both a challenge and fun, just an annoyance.

ODST also had less health packs, 4 instead of 6, less arsenal of weapons to pick from, DMRs for example are just to good, and no infinite ammo crates. Which again, removes a lot of the challenge ODST had.

OP is trying too hard to make his point. To an annoying state.

Yeah, let's not discuss opinions on a message board!

I preferred it only because I loved playing as an ODST.

It isn't our shiznit anymore.

Because I could never recreate that same feeling I had in ODST in Reach. Trying to get to the 5th set made you feel like every wave was so intense, that you needed absolute teamwork in order to barely survive.

It's the same reason that while Reach's Forge is better than Halo 3's Forge, Halo 3's customs are miles better than Reach customs. Fun in a game is much more than simply having more knobs and dials to turn.

Stop arguing over imaginary -blam!-. May as well argue over Santa Claus. There will never be proof that there is/was a god - and before people start saying "HERP DERP PROVE THERE WASN'T ONE ROFLOLOL" well, you are the people who made it up in the first place so we know there isn't one
What created the big bang then? A coalition of genetically modified TR-909s with extra distortion?

How do people even like Firefight?

  • 12.02.2012 11:50 AM PDT

It was more fun, for whatever reason. I think it's how the way ODST's combat was set up it it was more suited for Firefight (even with Reach's options, it didn't feel the same.) Not to mention, choppers.

A competitive players main goal is to win.
A casuals main goal is to have fun regardless of whether that results in a win or loss.
It has nothing to do with individual skill or knowledge, it has to do with the reason you play.

Both Firefight modes were boring. Fighting AI is boring.

I will say ODST firefight had significantly better maps. I also had more fun playing it because there was no multiplayer to accompany the campaign. Therefore, if my friends wanted to play we did Firefight.

The maps and the difficulty factor. ODST firefight felt more like a survival gametype where teamwork was vital.

Because Reach's maps were terrible. ODST's maps, especially Lost Platoon, were absolutely amazing!

Mythical Group

There is no greater catharsis than arguing on the Flood.

First reason that comes into mind is that in ODST you had less cuncussion rifle/frg bottomless clip spamming from enemies, making it actually survivable for the not-as-hardy ODSTs.

Second is that the overall difficulty was greater in ODST, just so that if you used superior strategy you could survive without those retarded bottomless clip spammings.

I missed the Magnum from ODST, and because people didn't share many solo run strategies on how to position yourself and control the map, I didn't find much fun in being disoriented... meaning I suck.
