If you're a student, you can download almost all Autodesk products for free, after an agreement to not sell the content you make.

If I recall correctly, it doesn't even require an .edu email address for verification. It's a great opportunity to try 3ds Max/Maya out without taking the financial plunge.

These two are a mainstay of the industry, and an absolute must if you hope to pursue a career involving 3D art/design.

Thank you for clearing that up. You're definitely right about that. I would have probably started with Maya when I was 12 instead of blender if I would have known and had access to a student email.

Actually, you do need that .edu for the email. It's the way Autodesk can recognize you are a student. Whether a current or past student.
Either way, it's awesome the free stuff they give you.
I have Maya 2012/13. Full package for free. Still exploring the others but not really a need at this point till i am required to learn about it during classes. (most likely in the upcoming semesters)

Yes, although some engines may require plugins to export into the right format.

I'm currently using Maya for my long term project in our game development class actually.

OT: These are all great, but you forgot about Unity and Unity Pro.

Microsoft do the same through Dreamspark, but you will need a .edu email/ISIC card/auth code from your school. Notably you can get the XNA Studio, which is a fairly accessible environment to actually try out using those models you've produced, and you can get Visual Studio, which is as essential to software development as 3ds/maya are to 3d art + design.

I envy you, I'm still in highschool. I left out unity because its not a modeling program and frankly I've never used it. Feel free to post your own summary of how it could be helpful for people to know and what it is used for.

Well Unity is a game/rendering program. VERY nice to have. The sandbox is fun too being able to create... LIFE! lol.

I was always told that the best way to learn programming is through books. Unfortunately other than that and the link provided I can't help you much.
