2D > 3D
2D is fun and all and I love it, but it's difficult to get truly believable animations out of it that aren't overtly caricatured or cartoony.
I've seen some amazing 3D and I've seen some terrible 3D, but ultimately I'd go that route if I found a relatively inexpensive and accessible way to do so.
I still stand by the notion that 3D is WAY more difficult to model (especially when simulations are taken into account; the hair simulation for Merida in Brave took 3 years to make alone) but 3D is much easier in terms of scene direction. It's easier to light the set and move cameras around, as well as achieve certain effects such as DOF (depth of field).
2D is interestingly the opposite. It would be way easier to model but way more difficult to animate, especially when dealing with lots of moving objects (hair, vehicles) in three dimensional space and camera movements like crane shots.
I have my respect for both, but 2D animators always get a little more of it since they have to employ several camera tricks to make use of the viewing frame.
