Subject: How did you overcome your fear of public speaking?

Continuous exposure? Thats what worked for me, sure I'll still go red in the face, but I'm just used to it now.

What doesn't kill you, only makes you stranger

I do better when I don't prepare things. If you're forced to improvise, you're not too worried about things like your voice and what people are thinking. You're worried about what you're going to say next.

Here's some tips:

- Play off the audience. Keep them entertained.
- Keep looking at your audience, instead of at a script/speech. Learn it word for word.
- Throw in humour every now and again.
- Don't stand still for too long, keep moving around.

RIP Halo 2: November 9, 2004-May 10, 2010
I was the 2nd to last person to get kicked off Halo 2, see the thread Here

Also, humor is a great way to ease any tension during a presentation. If you're doing a powerpoint presentation, put a funny picture on your first slide like a lolcat or meme that relates to your subject or audience.

Sometimes I am tempted to quit gaming. I can no longer play without seeing ponyphags, horrendously bad teammates and mexicans.

Gaming community, I want you to know that you suck.

The only problem anyone has with public speaking is the fact that someone makes you do it.

  • 12.02.2012 1:14 PM PDT

Speaking Publicly usually helps.

  • 12.02.2012 1:17 PM PDT

I just stopped caring how people reacted.

  • 12.02.2012 1:20 PM PDT

I to have a fear of public speaking.

I am in debate club for our high school, I went to one of my first debates last week, where I was up in front of 60 odd people. Despite my knowledge in the subject, I stuttered in the middle of the speech and pretty much looked like a idiot. But I suppose the more you do it the better you get.

Watch out. If I post in your thread, chances are it'll die. I've been cursed, and if I kill your thread, I'm sorry.

Most of the time, I find it helps to not have a "word for word" script. Make it like an outline so that you always have an idea of what you want/need to talk about, but you don't have to worry about losing your place. Chances are you can get a general idea of where you are in an outline at any given time.

Also, another tip, instead of looking at people's faces, scan the top of their heads. Chances are they are going to be far enough away that they won't know the difference between you looking at their eyes or their hair.

If only there was someone as egotistical and funny as my clone.

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

I don't have a fear of it, but I do think I am a terrible speaker, so I just go with it and get it done as fast as possible.

  • 12.02.2012 1:27 PM PDT

“If we will disbelieve everything, because we cannot certainly know all things, we shall do much what as wisely as he who would not use his legs, but sit still and perish, because he had no wings to fly.” - John Locke

"How can anyone be enlightened? Truth after all is so poorly lit." - Rush

The only way to get better at public speaking, is to speak in public! Really, the more you do it, the easier it gets.

If you can read this, that means I'm not a Shaolin monk...

yet.

When High School started the role of awesome guy was open in my class, so I took that and have been super confident ever since.

Do you even lift, OP?

  • 12.02.2012 1:29 PM PDT

ooga booga boooh

It comes naturally for some I guess.

For me, I just went up and read it like a boss. Seriously. I just read it like I knew what I was talking about. If I studdered, I'd walk around like I was pondering some deep, important question.

Just go with it, man.

I'm your biggest fan!

I have the same problem.

Practice. Start off just doing your thing in your room by yourself, or line up some stuffed animals to watch you or something. See if you can work your way up to doing it in front of friends or family and make sure you know exactly what you need to say.

All Retards are Retarded...

You Catch My Drift??????????

Ok thanks for the advice everyone.

I do understand that more exposure will improve how I do. Last year I did a few presentations and it got me a little better. I also have some index cards outlining what I am going to talk about tomorrow. I am reading them out loud to get comfortable with the material and I am already feeling better about it.

Thanks again and good luck to the people who also have this problem

It isn't our shiznit anymore.

Try not to glaze over the crowd. Look at individual people as if you are having a 1-on-1 conversation with them.

Now that you've taken the time to look at my sig, I actually regret not providing you with something more worthwhile.

I've never overcome it. If I have to do it, I pick a couple of people in the audience that have a friendly face and alternate between looking at them and the back wall. It's not perfect, but it works.
