Move castle up to two, move the bishop to the white square which is diagonal of the castle. Move the castle to the white square in front of the king. Game.


The problem with that is that black could then easily move the pawn up one, eliminating the chance for winning. OP mentions it up there.


True, but I'm sure a lot of people of amateur chess players wouldn't think of doing that.

Got it. It was pretty obvious just by looking at it that moving the king or pawn wouldn't accomplish anything, so I knew you had to move the rook. And the only way for moving the rook to make a difference would be if it couldn't be taken by the bishop, but instead the pawn.

Yep. It's basically an illustration of "zugzwang", or the situation in which every move loses. Rh6 immediately causes this for Black. Once you grasp the idea of the puzzle, it's clear that you just need to remove the h6 square for Black's h pawn.
