How did Gollum ever get into Moria to follow the fellowship when the mines caved in right behind them?

I like shorts. They're comfy and easy to wear.

I think he was already there.

"It is the cruelest fate, to have written words that meant well and see them made wicked and unwise. What was meant to encourage life, used instead to justify taking it."

Gollum entered Moria through the east gate after he escaped the Elves of Mirkwood. He tried to leave Moria through the west gate, but was unsuccessful. When the Fellowship arrived through the west gate, he followed them out.

In the quote of Gandalf's about mercy in the mines, he says, referring to Gollum, "He's been following us for three days."

Because Gollum is a sneaky devil.

It was a four day journey from the west gate to the east gate. Gollum probably started following them a day after they arrived.

3 days within the mines? I think. The film doesn't really explain the length of the travels well.

Although it wasn't really clear in the film, I think the Fellowship spent quite a while in the mines.

By the time Gandalf told Frodo Gollum had been following for three days, had they already been in the mines for over three days? I thought it hadn't even been one, but it's difficult to tell time in a movie, and I haven't read the books for over five years...

Well...There's my answer. Yeah, time is weird in the movies, such as the huge number of years between the time Gandalf gave Frodo the ring until he returned to tell him to go to Bree.

Just Googled this. Yep, 17 long years, and if I remember correctly, Frodo was like 50 years old...

Personally didn't like Frodo in the film version, too whiny.
