Franky said he was fighting a Grunt in the update...so either the Grunts rebel against the Elites or the hardships of past time didnt really just fly over.

Grunts (and Elites, and Brutes, and Jackals... don't know about the hunters, though) are not a hive mind. They have personalities. Since Grunts were/are regarded as worthless, and thus almost surely had less education (read: propaganda and brainwashing), they probably have the most deviation of opinion amongst the entire Covenant. There would be fanatical followers of the Prophets who regard the powers struggle and betrayal as punishment from the Gods, who may seek "redemption" by killing as many humans as possible, and those Grunts who want revenge on the Brutes (this group also seems to contain at least most of the High-Ranking Elites) at all costs, even if it means siding with the humans. And of course, the moderates (for lack of a better term), who think that humans are still filthy and need to be exterminated, and now the Brutes and their allies are now up for the slaughter.

Why the assumption that Frankie was playing as the MC!? Maybe he was playing as a brute.

He said he was fighting "something bigger than a grunt." So there.
.......What does that have to do with anything? It could be a Flood level featuring the flood Juggernaut, and he didnt want to give away the fact its back. It could be any of the following:
--jackal
--elite
--brute
--spartan
--sentinel
--enforcer
--prophet
--sharquoi
--combat form
--carrier form
--juggernaut
--Gravemind
--Longsword
--spectre
--phantom
--ghost
--wraith
--banshee
--warthog (any kind)
--scorpion
--scarab
--marine
--engineer

EDIT: nevermind.
