Is this somehow connected to tax breaks on those who donate?

I'm personally against it. It voids the good will of doing the act, as it's no longer altruistic, but for one's own good.

You've asked far too complex a question of the flood. Personally I've given thousands to charity and received small ish tokens in return. I don't think it's selfish because its a reminder to me that I helped someone with the money.

A truly selfless act I perform is donating blood. Why? Because it costs me nothing, but is incredibly valuable to anyone who needs it.
