One thing I heard was to let them lock on the air only and not land. That might work.

I think rocket locking should be an option that can be toggled on or off, as for default game settings keep it off but make the rocket shoot faster.

But decrease it's AA I think that the AA in halo 2 was a little to powerful then it should be.

They should make it so you have to track the target with the rocket, like when you fire the rocket it follows the crosshair(only when pointed at a vehicle). This would be better so that in case a warthog is targeted, a sniper could take out the rocket guy before the rocket hit and it would fly off in a random direction.

I agree, Bungie should definately take a cue from Half-Life 2 and kill two birds with one stone.

People who are in disfavor of the auto-lock should be happy, and so should those who still prefer some form of tracking with the projectile. The rocket launcher should be redesigned so as to allow for the user to have to manually paint the target with a laser.

Personally, I'd add a fifteen foot arming distance so that rocket's couldn't go off point blank. I despise the "one for one" logic to slayers that eliminates the concept of self preservation. Sure you could shoot them with a cold launched, unarmed rocket but it would have only the stopping power of a melee bash.

Secondly, I'd double the lock on time but increase the speed of the rocket for some small measure of compensation. That way, if you were targeted with a rocket and someone was locking on you could hear the "tone" and be alerted to a lock-on attempt and make the dash for cover. Increasing the speed makes up a little for the extra time spent locking.

The rocket launcher should only track a vehicle, not a person like it does now. If it turns red on a person the rocket should go straight not turn towards the perosn even if he is in the reticle. So many times I miss a rocket target cause the rocket tracked a person instead of going where it was suppose to go.

GOD, PLEASE remove it! This feature has single-handedly ruined every vehicle in the game.

In the previous game, if you got the flag out of the base and into a vehicle, you usually scored. Not now. If you set one foot in a ghost or a hog, you're dead. Vehicles are no longer assets. Now they are merely a liability.

I think the rocket's lock-on ability was created in response to HaloPC's Banshee, which was pretty unstoppable with a good pilot, and many people complained. However, instead of just making the Banshee more vulnerable to small arms fire to balance it, Bungie neutered the Banshee (removed fuel rod cannon and screwed up the handling) and made the rocket launcher lock on to everything. And in doing so, every vehicle in the game suffered.

The end result was a game that is more frustrating and less fun than the first.

EDIT: I would be happy with Tex Mex Matt's solution of "painting" the target.

^^^ That is so stupid, If there was no lock-on people would always score with the warthog and games would often end with a tie.

i think its quite brilliant. the rocket is completely avoidable in a vehicle. (doesnt mean i can do it) but lots of people do. and there is a reason there is only one on the map. without it people would score left and right and the banshee would dominate. it evens teh playing field and adds tons more strategy. besides how many times in coagulation is your plan foiled by a rocket? it is and probably always will be a sniper problem not a rocket.

And that is why they added the homing rocket in the first place. It stops people from just jumping in a vehicle and scoring.

So, you're saying games now don't always end in ties? I'd rather have a 2-2 tie than a 0-0 tie. Scoring is fun.

@airjazz:
Snipers are a problem now only because everyone is on foot. It's too risky to drive a hog or a ghost on any of the large maps.

I can't believe you kids. You're afraid of too much scoring? For christ's sake, scoring is fun. Games ending in 0-0 ties are not.

How about the person/people in the vehicle get a warning that they are being locked onto and therefore have a small chance to scram before they get hit?

How about have a little warning when someone is trying to get their sniper reticle on your head? [/sarcasm]

Bad idea. I'd just bail out on the vehicle if I knew I was going to die.

That's why I said small chance; it wouldn't be more than half a second or so. And the sniper comparison doesn't fit because at least a sniper headshot takes some skill, while rocket lock on is easy as anything.

But okay if you think it's crap I was just throwing it out there.

I think it should stay, though if someone locks on to you, there should be a rocket warning symbol on the HUD so it you can have time to try avoid it.

The Banshee would not dominate if there was a Scorpion tank on the map. That is how you balance a flying vehicle, not by adding a weapon feature that renders all other vehicles useless.

Having the rocketman "paint" the target would work, I think. Or remove the lock on ability, make the rocket travel faster, and make the rocket kill any vehicle in one shot. That way, if you're skilled enough, you can still kill vehicles from far away, but good drivers could still escape. This type of rocket launcher is much more fun and satisfying to use than the "fire and forget" one we have now.

Leave it as is. No removal, no longer lock-on confirmation. But the rocket explosion visuals..ugh. It looks like a phosperous burst compared to Halo's rocket launcher.

A lock-on warning beep is too much like those flight simulator games. A lock-on warning icon would be better. Then again, if people had the opportunity to bail out every time a rocket is incoming, then that would make the lock-on virtually useless.

Just because you know there is an incoming rocket does not mean you will be able to avoid it everytime

No. Of course I would rather win. As it is now, most games end in 0-0 ties because people have to get the flag out of the base and (slowly) run it back on foot. Most of the time it just stays in one place outside the base with everyone fighting over it until time runs out. Vehicles are almost completely useless. Nevertheless, win, lose, or tie, I would always want a high scoring game.

Look. I just think the "lock-on" feature of the rocket launcher takes more away from the overall gameplay than it brings to it. I would prefer if Bungie went another way with Halo 3.

Besides, Halo's and HaloPC's rocket launcher was just fine. There was no reason to change it. I seriously think the only reason they did was because of HaloPC's Banshee. However, balancing one vehicle at the expense of all the rest isn't a good thing.

Did you guys even play Halo or HaloPC, or are you just arguing for the sake of arguing?
