Subject: Was I right to send this employee home

I work as a manager in a retail store and I had a problem with an employee today. I had a 22 year old worker I had to send home early.

His attitude was fine, he was working really hard and he was polite to all of the customers

But he had a extreme flatulence problem. Boy was he farting, and it smelled bad. About 1 hour after I sent him home his mommy called and told me she was upset with me for being mean. She thinks it was very unprofessional for me to send him home for a little gas (I wanted to tell her she was just mad because she had to smell it).

Who was wrong, the smelter or the deleter?

Should've sent him to a less busy area of the store.

The areas he was in were constantly less busy.

Christmas would be sad for some kids if I let him stay.

Yes, that's bad.

I think you were right on this one. If he can't control his flatulence and it has the potential to negatively impact your business, you ought to send him home until the situation is resolved.

It's really no different than sending an employee home because he's sick.

I know everything, I've just forgotten most of it.

Also, my XBL Gamertag is 'Wenggh', not 'A Stolen Fruit'.

No OP, you were wrong.

Send yourself home next time.

If you see this post in your topic I'm sorry to tell you but your topic is dying.

You could have taken him outside to clear the air.

Judging from personal experience, he even wouldn't be able to work properly and keep going to the bathroom

His job was with the coustomers and the coustomers didn't want to go near him. I think sending farty home was the way to go. We will see what the GM of the store thinks in the morning though.

Get him out.

Get him out, get him out, get him out.
Other employees don't want to smell methane on the workstation. Nor to customers.

This is no different than sending home a worker because he is throwing up. There are no negatives on his performance or his work ethics, he was simply rendered incapable of providing proper service for the day.

Well it depends. Do you know why he had such flatulence issues that day? Does he have a food intolerance, say to lactose, that was the cause? Or is it because of an actual medical condition such as an IBS?

His mother should have taught him better manners, In other words, taught him to go to the bathroom to do such things.

he was the unprofessional one, you were simply trying to maintain the image of your company.

Come on man, stop degrading the guy for having his mother call. I don't think you can really grasp how horrible embarrassing this was for him. He was humiliated at work by his boss and he may very well have digestive issues that cause this for him. If I were you I'd say "I'm sorry that I embarrassed you but it was with business in mind, I didn't mean to offend you." Yeah, the guy is sensitive about it but some people really don't do well when they're criticized.

Feel free to send me messages, please be willing to wait 6-8 years for a reply.

1-7 hours if you at least tried to make it readable.

Immediately if you are Yax, Telec, or legendary.

Never if you are mythic, you guys smell funny.

You probably could have handled it better, maybe take him to one side and ask if he was feeling sick, and maybe say "im sending you home to get some rest" rather than "Im sending you home for being a smelly little gasbag"
