Subject: Today I brought a knife to school

Alright, now that may sound much more terrible than it really is, but also not.

Yesterday, I received a large shipment of delicious grapefruit, and I wanted to enjoy it at school today. Now, this summer, I went to Paraguay for this awesome summer project, and in Paraguay they ate grapefruit(and pretty much all citrus fruits) by cutting off the orange skin with a knife while still leaving a thick coat of fiber around the fruit so that when you cut out a hole from the top of the fruit you can squeeze the fruit efficiently juicing it not having it break.

Now to the point. I decided to bring a grapefruit and a rather small 2 inch blade knife to cut it with. So during lunch, I whipped out the grapefruit and knife(I assumed having such a tiny knife for the purpose of eating a large citrus fruit would be okay, which I learned was not true very soon.) A security guard pulled me into the police office(the one in school) after I had finished cutting my grapefruit(at least I got to enjoy it :/ ) and I might get in some serious trouble. I've been suspended for two days(which I guess isn't too bad) but I'll have to go to a hearing were I may be criminally charged and expelled from school.

Based on these circumstances(which the police and administration are completely aware of), do you think I might get expelled or receive criminal charges? That would suck ass, as I'm an IB student with decent grades(well right now they're mostly Bs but that can be changed with some extra credit) and looking toward entering a good college to become an aeronautical engineer. Also, Do you think their actions are justified?

tl;dr I brought a small knife to school to eat a grapefruit, I might be in serious trouble

You should have shanked the guard and darted for the exit.

Brainwashing, idiotic media: "hur dur, vido gaems cas vilenc n iz nt gud. dey ned 2 b baned."

Logic: Really? Then please explain how there's violence in third world countries. I guess they're all poor due to the large amount of video games they buy.

-OP is an IB student
-Thinks a 2 inch knife isn't a big deal

wut?

If you really thought bringing a knife to school was a good idea, you definitely dont need to be kicked out. In fact , its clear you have a lot to learn.

But to answer your question Ill quote the Irish guy from Braveheart. "You're fooked"

Swag punks, fuck off!

You can get in trouble for bringing a knife to school to stab people with, but not when you can just as easily do it with a pencil.

Well not sure about the law in schools, but if the knifes blade is no longer than the length of your palm you can carry it.

At least in New York, not sure about other states.

(I read through the entire list of laws of weapons you can carry so please don't say I don't know what I am talking about. Took me ages to read through the damn thing.)

You should have known not bring any kind of blade but I don't think expulsion or criminal charges is necessary.

No one gives a -blam!- what the reason is. I can tell someone I bring it around just in cause, but then murder 50 people with it. Whos fault is it then?

I know OP... I'm the grapefruit's lawyer.

Goodness. This seems to minuscule to be charged over. You brought a knife to school to eat a fruit. I think they'll give you a warning and let it slide.

I've already been suspended and have a court hearing :/

Depends on the laws where you live I suppose. Here you can't bring even plastic knives to school without permission but on college campuses you can have knives 3 inches or shorter with you. If the law where you are says no knives they can totally charge you.

You've done nothing wrong and it's blatantly obvious the whole thing is a case of overzealous policing. Just don't say anything stupid at the hearing and you'll be fine.

That's what I thought too, that's why I brought such a tiny knife, but that's not the case I guess. I told them that I had thought that before hand, so maybe that'll make them more lenient on me

Yes. It's your own fault for bringing a knife to school. It's not like you have a job where you use one and you accidentally left it on you. You knew knifes are not allowed, but you still brought one. Just because it's only 2 inches doesn't mean you can't do some serious damage with it.

Shoot me a pm if you want to talk about anything!

Well this is a bit tricky. Obviously you had no violent intentions, but the school would much rather err on the side of caution when it comes to safety (which I feel is completely fair).

We both know that you wouldn't use the knife to hurt anyone, but the staff involved probably sees it as a potential crisis averted.

Good luck at the hearing, OP. Hopefully they'll just give you a warning.
