You should have known not bring any kind of blade but I don't think expulsion or criminal charges is necessary.

Everyone's hands are tied. He, and you, should blame the community for passing such a stupid rule. But whatever, he knew about it and brought a knife anyways.

Oh I do every time a case like this pops up. The OP is responsible for his actions, but honestly the punishment does not fit the crime in my opinion.

So what exactly do you guys feel would be the ideal punishment for the OP? Does he truly deserve to be lumped together with people who've committed real crime? He didn't hurt anybody, he didn't threaten anybody and his only victim was a grapefruit.

That sounds like a confiscation of the knife, community service and a warning to me.

Schools usually have an absolutely-zero-tolerance-no-questions-asked-expulsion policy for knives and weapons.

So I would not be surprised at all if he gets expelled

I'm aware, but he really shouldn't have his life ruined over this mistake that did not threaten anybody but a fruit. Our schools should get rid of zero-tolerance and employ some common sense in cases like this.

Honestly, my little brothers can't even play tag anymore at school because it "teaches exclusionary behavior" and thus falls under their zero-tolerance policy. While different circumstances, it just reflects how stupid our schools have gotten.

that wont ruin his life. OP should link us to his school districts website. They usually have their policies on things like this there.

I think an expulsion and criminal record do more than you think.

I'm your biggest fan!

OP, are you a dumbass? You don't bring knives to school. It's not up to you what is and is not a weapon.

We can see that your intentions were innocent (though I do suspect part of it was wanting to feel like a badass) and hopefully whoever's in charge at the hearing will also see that. Apologise for the misunderstanding, promise not to to do it again, and you should be fine.

Seriously, though. A knife to school?

  • 12.03.2012 3:58 PM PDT

I accidently brought a backpack LOADED with knives and hunting gear to school once.

My brother used my backpack for hunting over the weekend and didn't tell me so I went to school with stuff that could probably throw me in jail.

When I went to my backpack during lunch break to get some schoolwork, I figured it out, and went straight to the principal's office. My parents had to come pick it up. I ended up okay.

they might not press criminal charges. Alot of the time they don't in cases where no threats were made and the knife wasn't being used in a provocative manner.

but if they have a district no-tolerance policy then they sort of have to expel him. It just depends on the policy.

I wasn't trying to be hard, or a rebel. I kept the knife on the down low, I didn't even tell my best friends, it honestly was meant only as a tool to eat my grapefruit. The only ones who knew about it were the security guard and the kid sitting next to me

  • 12.03.2012 4:00 PM PDT

going over your intentions means nothing to anyone, Nobody can prove what your intentions were in bringing the knife. or whether you were just trying to innocently cut your fruit. Or if you were trying to test the rules.

The only thing that can be determined is your actions. And by your own admission you are guilty as charged.

Whatever you say. You don't need to prove yourself to me.

The student's section of this matter isn't really mentioned on the website, but there is info for employees. "Employees displaying or threatening any violence in the workplace or otherwise violating this policy are subject to discipline, including immediate termination." If this is the case, that means it isn't zero-tolerance. If they hear my case hopefully I don't get expelled or get a criminal record

  • 12.03.2012 4:10 PM PDT

Look, you can't bring a knife to school anymore. I don't care if you could in the '70s and before that. Times have changed because lunatics have done stupid things and killed a lot of people. It doesn't matter that you didn't plan to harm anyone and I believe you weren't going to but rules are rules. If they let you bring a knife so you can eat a grapefruit, then the next guy does that might stab someone with it. I'm sorry OP but you did something stupid and now you have to pay the price. The simple answer to this was to just not eat the damn grapefruit or peel it before you went to school and put it in a plastic bag or something.

the employee section is irrelevant in this case. obviously anyone whether student or employee who

""displaying or threatening any violence in the workplace...."

is going to be in big trouble.

Anyway, I think it was a stupid move on your part but not worth expulsion.

A real test of a man is if he is willing to scrape a sharpened razor up and down his junk just to please a woman.

That's something you shouldn't even risk, although that doesn't mean the rule isn't stupid. The "guard" (yard duty) saw you peeling the grapefruit, didn't he?

I understand nothing because my life is a conspiracy.

Just tell them that you were using it to cut your grapefruit, a trick you picked up when vacationing to Paraguay(?).

But seriously, you should have asked before you brought a knife to school.

Well Australians do have crime in their blood. So I wouldn't blame them for being suspicious.
