Let's say everybody is allowed to bring in their 2 inch knife or pocket knife. Would you really want bullies, emotionally unstable people and bully victims to be carrying around a knife?

  • 12.03.2012 3:38 PM PDT

While I do think the suspension they gave you is very justified, the possible criminal charges against you are going a little overboard, and isn't necessary .

I would think twice before bringing any type of blade onto school property next time.

Couldn't you have brought some like flimsy, plastic knife? Like those really dull ones..

I've heard of kids getting in trouble for those too. I don't even think the packets of plastic sporks even came with knives at my old high school. I've even heard of kids getting suspended for turning in knives they had forgotten were in their bags.

What is realistically stopping those people in the first place?

I had always heard among my peers that there was a smaller than the palm rule, and in our planner, where it says the rules, the only real mention of knives is "No Weapons," so I assumed a knife smaller than my palm wasn't considered a weapon.

Nothing, but school rules can be a deterrent. But if it was allowed for EVERYONE to bring one, then things can get out of hand, or they wont. Id rather take my chances and not allow that.

no, just good advice.

For the record, I am against zero tolerance policies with automatic sentencing. That said, I would never do my thing to test one. It's like stepping in front of a bus.

So what exactly do you guys feel would be the ideal punishment for the OP? Does he truly deserve to be lumped together with people who've committed real crime? He didn't hurt anybody, he didn't threaten anybody and his only victim was a grapefruit.

That sounds like a confiscation of the knife, community service and a warning to me.

You're an idiot, and no one should feel sorry for you. You brought a knife to school, what did you expect was going to happen?
This.

Also, you don't HAVE to eat the grapefruit, so there was no reason that you HAD to bring a damn knife.

Seriously, how did you think you wouldn't get punished for pulling out a knife in school.

If I were testing the rule, I would have flaunted it. I was at a table with a bunch of friends, of which only one knew I had the knife and cut my grapefruit table level. The security guard happened to walk by as I was putting it away. Honestly my motives didn't have any deep meaning; I just wanted some grapefruit

Schools usually have an absolutely-zero-tolerance-no-questions-asked-expulsion policy for knives and weapons.

So I would not be surprised at all if he gets expelled

it doesn't matter what I think or feel. If there is a 0 tolerance policy, no one gets a say. They have to carry it out or lose their jobs.

Everyone's hands are tied. He, and you, should blame the community for passing such a stupid rule. But whatever, he knew about it and brought a knife anyways.

You don't need a knife to eat a grapefruit. you just peel them and eat them like oranges.

I'm aware, but he really shouldn't have his life ruined over this mistake that did not threaten anybody but a fruit. Our schools should get rid of zero-tolerance and employ some common sense in cases like this.

Honestly, my little brothers can't even play tag anymore at school because it "teaches exclusionary behavior" and thus falls under their zero-tolerance policy. While different circumstances, it just reflects how stupid our schools have gotten.
