Subject: A question to Americans

Posted by: LordMonkey
I could pose the question of people who use the word "Americans". After all, there are three Americas; North, Central, and South. Why is it that citizens of the United States are the only ones called "Americans"?

Nope, Mexico, Panama, and the former UPCA are part of North America, no such thing as a Central America.

For the same reason I get Canadians and Americans mixed up. I'm not from that part of the world, so I don't know as much about the dialects and regions as the locals.
Don't really need to know about the dialects etc when they're two distinct countries.

I've met Canadians and asked what part of the States they're from. >_<

If you're talking about my side, then England, Scotland and Northern Ireland are all part of the United Kingdom. Wales isn't even a country.
Wait you're serious? You think Canada and the United States are the same? HAHAHAHAHA -blam!- all the people who think Americans are the most ignorant.

  • 12.03.2012 4:11 PM PDT

The only people who care are the elitist English people who feel superior being called English rather than British.

Which is not a real thing, if you should call it something call it the near east. Middle East is just ridiculous.

Its not my actions that define me, but under what light I'm being looked upon.

Me after a physics lecture "So what you're saying is, non of it actually exists"
Yellow box "and I thought we were crazy"

actually, non of them are a countrys. The country is the United Kingdom, it is an incredibly common mistake however to claim england is a country. Of course though I would refer to it as a country purely because It gets messy when you ask what is england then?

  • 12.03.2012 4:14 PM PDT

I don't think that. As for why others think that I know not.

1) I didn't hear very much about Whales, Ireland or Scottland in history class, instead it was filled with England invade this, and England colonized that.
Yeah its funny though because right now England technically has zero power at all because it isn't a sovereign state
Just had a read and they seem to be almost synonymous. What's the difference?

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

Because we aren't from the UK and don't really feel all that compelled to learn the difference. I understand it, but it just isn't all that important to most people.

Just my 2 cents.
You should break the stereotype you have and try to learn more about other country's you are not from.Did they not teach you any of this in school?

I would also suggest for you to learn to read, especially when I said I did know the difference between the UK, Britain and England.
You said you were not compelled to learn the difference because you were not from there. Its good to learn about the world and the country's that inhabit it you know

Alright then, time for some reading comprehension. To most Americans, learning the difference between the UK, England, etc is not too important to our everyday lives and thus we as a people aren't exactly compelled to care about the difference. HOWEVER, that does not stop individuals, like myself as I stated above, from learning about the difference by our own accord.

That make it easier for you to understand?

No it's not... It's a way of quickly identifying a geographic/ (sometimes geopolitical) location.

If you have a difficult time understanding that- try common names like the 'cold'. There really is no such thing as there are many viruses that cause the 'cold', yet it is used as a quick way to identify the general 'area'.

Try harder.

Debateable. If you take history of past civilizations you'll notice areas like the Middle East and places like Mexico, Panama, etc. are called Mesopotamia and Mesoamerica. You might notice the greek word "Meso" meaning middle or intermidiate, a synonym of the word 'center' or 'central'.

So Mesoaamerica = Middle America
Middle America = Central America

Everything England does is controlled by the UK government which is not England. While Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland. All have devolved parliaments

  • 12.03.2012 4:17 PM PDT

Seriously, why do you English care? I'm from Ohio and I call myself American. England is in the UK and in Britain and thus British. Suck it up and admit that you are a part of a whole.

  • 12.03.2012 4:17 PM PDT

Because we left you and therefore, we don't care about you enough for that to be common knowledge.

I never said the others are countries. ;) Just that Wales most definitely isn't. No, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland are constituent countries. Wales is a principality, just like Monaco.

I don't think that, but to be fair. England is the main part of the UK there's no doubt about it.

Why is it such a big deal? I can think of a million other things to throw a hissy fit about.
It isnt really. But its annoying especially if you talk about "England" in WW2 that just completely ignores all the troops from the other parts of Britain that fought against the Axis

Its because to us there accents sound similar
That doesn't matter. I don't see how accents sounding similar excuses you from not know that Canada and the United Sates are different countries. That's honestly appalling to me. In 6th grade I had tests where I had to label every country on each continent. I would understand if you didn't know about some small, unimportant country but the US and Canada are pretty prominent in world affairs.

  • 12.03.2012 4:24 PM PDT

Because Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales are pretty insignificant compared to England.

The UK has a total population around 65 million and England has a population around 55 million.
