Ok, i was watching the halo 3 trailer again and i thought of something. When Cortana says "I know you, your past, your future" and since time repeats itself in an infinite circle, the master chief will have to go through extreme physical and mental pain like when he was a child (for those of us who read the books) so I think that to accomplish his ultimate goal of winning the war he will once again have to go through extreme pain and suffering, mentally and physically.

interesting. well thats a good idea. i wonder what will happen to MC that will cause him so much suffering. perhaps a character dying, OR maybe cortana gets destroyed

I don't mean to pick holes, but I think it may just be a reference to how hard he's going to have to fight in the coming battles. In Halos 1&2 the MC was fighting pretty much non-stop for several days in a row. Constant combat would cause quite a lot of physical and mental suffering. Battle fatigue, that sort of thing.

At the end maybe. It's not too far off to assume the story of Halo has a parallel leading up to the point where Halo begins, plus repeating the past.

Or maybe, this time she's narrating during the cutscenes in Halo 3 since she's the only intelligent "human" being left in the universe.... and she feels she must record the tale before she shuts herself down forever.

Then, thousands of years later.... on a new Earth very much like the previous one, her recordings will be uncovered by a Bungie Archaeologist in his own backyard while burying his daughter's pet cat.... and thus was the Halo franchise founded....

I think that the MC is going to have to face the fact that he is the only one who can save earth but to do so he has to pay with his life or something or other

I agree with you that Bungie is giving us a big hint as to what we can expect in Halo 3. Here's a different spin on it: having read the books I'm pretty sure that the storyline cannot be completed without mention of Dr. Halsey, Fred, Linda, and Kelly. So Bungie has a slight problem: how to introduce so many new characters from the books to fans who have only ever played the games. Dr. Halsey can't just show up out of nowhere with a cure for the Flood and an explanation for Cortana's strange condition.

The solution? Flashback levels, where you play as young Master Chief, in Spartan boot camp with his squad. Can you think of a better way to introduce Dr. Halsey, Fred, Linda, and Kelly? Playing as young Master Chief would be like playing Team SWAT, because he doesn't have his energy shield yet. He wouldn't be fighting Covenant or Flood either, and he would only have access to human weapons and vehicles. I'm sure Bungie could come up with a good level within those constraints.

So now do you see what Cortana might mean by "I know you, your past, your future" ?

That is a very logical explaination and yes I agree there is no better way
