This Saturday, the American Psychiatric Association board of trustees approved the latest proposed revisions to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, what will now be known as the DSM-V. This marks a historic milestone for people who are transgender and gender non-conforming, as their identities are no longer classified as a mental disorder. Homo-blam!-ity was similarly declassified as a mental disorder in 1973.[link]

Thoughts?

I make a living of selling my body, and I don't mean sex.

Another war lost.

Another war won.

What exactly does this mean for transgenders then?

Part of the negative stigma is removed. Having part of your life being defined as a mental disorder is troubling for a lot of people.

What does being Trans even mean? Why can't you just say you either feel Male or Female? Sorry, but I don't see any real way to be in between.

Maybe I just need my privilege checked, I don't know.

Honestly, to those who aren't trans, it's difficult to entirely understand. I know I have a lot of learning to do.

The fact is that your gender and your sex are two different, independent variables. Most people identify their gender in correlation to their sex, but not everyone does. Also, your gender is not binary; it's not black and white [similarly with orientation]; it's a continuum.

I know that. Sex is physical and Gender is mental. But if someone has something involving a difference between the two, why aren't they classified as Gender Identity Disorder which I assume is stall classed as a mental disorder?

So gender is what you say you are and what you see yourself as, while sex is what you officially are

*was unaware of this*

Its not something that you'd understand if you thought of it like that. I just think its because people think they'd be happier being the other gender. I do know a couple of transgenders, but its not the kind of thing I'd want to ask as it would be awkward for the both of us, and ultimately I don't care as long as everyone's content.

I think gender is pretty binary.
Either you are XY or XX. Anything else, XXX XYY XXY, to my understanding, is a genetic disorder or mutation.

That's how I see it.

And what negative stigma is removed? From the individual transgendered person or from society? Society will still see it as weird or taboo. Which probably won't help with the transgendereds' path to acceptance in society.

Not that I cared about any opinion from them about it, but cool.

EGO mos bulla astrum.

Good. It should be declared a bodily or genetic disorder.

Only the T part. I don't really consider it a win unless the LGB part also get a cut of the cake, which they don't.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Probably to avoid the baggage that goes along with the term, "disorder."

A. Gender and sex are not the same thing.
B. Chromosomal sex is not always binary
C. Chromosomal sex does not always align with the sex of one's genitals, such as in individuals with compete androgen insensitivity disorder.

That's how I see it.You see it very poorly.

And what negative stigma is removed? From the individual transgendered person or from society? Society will still see it as weird or taboo. Which probably won't help with the transgendereds' path to acceptance in society. The removal of same-sex behavior and orientation from the DSM in the '70's had a huge impact on the acceptance thereof in the long run.

Please stop complaining about the 'death of a loved one' it's my job. They probably deserved it anyways. Here's a warning, if you keep making pentagrams out of the neighbors livestock I will personally come to your house and kill everyone you love. Now leave me alone, I got to get back to work.

The Trans* community might disagree with you there, especially on things like the removal of DADT.

That underlined word is debatable. Great societies always become decadent before their historic fall.
