Subject: APA says being transgender is no longer a mental disorder

I'll bring the tritium laser cutters if you bring the beer!

Funny story.

Psychiatry isn't science and their opinion should ignored. These people only ever take out mental illnesses out of their "holy book" from popular demand. There is nothing scientific about it.

Psychiatry is all opinion, no science.

Also, your gender is not binary; it's not black and white [similarly with orientation]; it's a continuum.

I think gender is pretty binary.
Either you are XY or XX. Anything else, XXX XYY XXY, to my understanding, is a genetic disorder or mutation.
A. Gender and sex are not the same thing.
B. Chromosomal sex is not always binary
C. Chromosomal sex does not always align with the sex of one's genitals, such as in individuals with compete androgen insensitivity disorder.

That's how I see it.You see it very poorly.

And what negative stigma is removed? From the individual transgendered person or from society? Society will still see it as weird or taboo. Which probably won't help with the transgendereds' path to acceptance in society. The removal of same-sex behavior and orientation from the DSM in the '70's had a huge impact on the acceptance thereof in the long run.

A. I fail to see how gender and sex are independent, besides that of the psychological community saying they are.
B. I know chromosomal sex is not binary, that is why I also listed XXX XYY and XXY.
C. CAIS seems to be a genetic disorder more than a psychological one, which I believe is what the OP is referring to.

I care not how your pompous, haughty self sees how I see it. I was merely stating how I see it.

And okay, I see your last point.

Only the T part. I don't really consider it a win unless the LGB part also get a cut of the cake, which they don't.

Another win for the LGBT community.

Nah, a win for one is a win for the others. Shows the progression of society in the subject.
The Trans* community might disagree with you there, especially on things like the removal of DADT.

What does the trans community care? The rest of 'em can celebrate the victory all they want.

I would still like to know what causes Transgenderism. It isn't exactly "normal"

About time.

Though personally I'd be more curious as to what psychologist associations had to say, as opposed to psychiatry

A gender is a function and sex is an observation.

There are four words involved here, man, woman, masculinity, femininity. The first two are biological classification, the latter two are social constructs based on the first two.

Saying that a woman could never be a masculine individual is like saying that someone with a Asian body could never be European.

What exactly does this mean for transgenders then?

Part of the negative stigma is removed. Having part of your life being defined as a mental disorder is troubling for a lot of people.
The stigma is not going to be going far away for these individuals.

I see your first point, but your last point confuses me.

Women can be masculine, but an Asian body can never be European. Am I missing something here?

I meant European in the social construct sense, with European culture and stuff.

I'm making a parallel with the human body of a woman. Her biology doesn't define what she wants to be. Just as a man with an Asian body can decide to be part of European culture a human with a woman body could decide to be a masculine individual.

Have you never met immigrants and their descendants? They're European in the ideological sense, not the genetic one.

I think a trans would have some physiological problems in the military.
Only if the people serving alongside them are bigots, but that's a piss-poor reason to exclude them.

Masculine isn't the same as being a man, you know that right? Sure a girl can be tomboyish and act masculine, but if she starts thinking she IS a boy, she's deluding herself. An Asian person will never be European, never in a thousand millennia. Just like if I moved to China and thought of myself as Chinese I wouldn't be Chinese, I'd be a European who thinks he is Chinese, and everyone around me would rightfully think the same thing. If I thought I was a tree, would I now run on oxygen and sunlight?

...you realize that they take exogenous testosterone, right? And that they typically have higher levels to begin with than typical females...
