Subject: Why are video games so bad nowadays?

A competitive players main goal is to win.
A casuals main goal is to have fun regardless of whether that results in a win or loss.
It has nothing to do with individual skill or knowledge, it has to do with the reason you play.

Nice opinion.

Warning: You may find that my, or someone else's opinion does not comply with yours. Side effects of disagreement may include (but are not limited to): flaming, irrational behavior, broken keyboards, and/or nervous sweats. If you experience any of these symptoms refrain from communicating with others until the symptoms have subsided.

Many people who complain about newer games have become numb to the sensation that videogames originally provided for them. Children, who are often criticized for liking games that most of us would find utterly repulsive, are witnessing this sensation for the first time.

Often times you can recreate this sensation by way of the distinctly human phenomenon known as nostalgia, but the sensation remains overly artificial and you will soon be left with the same numb feeling if left playing these games for too long.

Games can remain very fun by introducing new concepts and innovating, while making use of the new technologies that are always under development. Don't be sad about what you can never experience again; look to the future and what it might hold.

The reason people find it so hard to be happy is that they always see the past better than it was, the present worse than it is, and the future less resolved than it will be.

Can be applied to this too, I suppose.

This is true, but the gems then are still gems now. It's easy to tell what stood the test of time - and may continue to do so - and what is outdated. Everything has its era, but some can transcend the generation gap and still seem new even today. It may not be as obvious with games seeing as how graphics and gameplay play a large part in it, but there still are observable 'pop culture' games, 'cult' games, and 'timeless classics' similar to music.

I totally agree, the best video games were made in the 50s.

Nah, I gotta say hop-scotch was the best.

Country: United States.
State: Pennsylvania.
County: Warren.
I graduated from high school on June-11-2011. I'm 19 right now. I'm turning 20 in December. I like playing video games, and board games. I like reading Sci-Fi, and World War II novels, and what not.

"There is nothing better in the world than being better at a video game than someone else....oh wait"

OP's right. The best games were made back in the day. The games The Anger Video Game Nerd reviews are the greatest games ever made.

  • 12.04.2012 3:21 AM PDT

I'd like to say that's not true, but... I guess the only reason is that the idea of gaming has become a lot more corporate since then. It's become so mainstream, profitable and advanced that without the help of publishing companies such as Activision and EA, gaming developers wouldn't even have access to the money required to make a game up to the standards of 2012. Publishing companies in turn look on gaming development as mere product production rather than an art form and rush everything, cut everything etc. They have their hands in everything, really. If sites like IGN and Gamespot didn't depend on the sponsorship they receive from such publishing companies, they probably would rate things like Call of Duty honestly low.

There is still of course fantastic games around.

I liked it when you bought a game that was 100% completed. It seems like nowadays you spend 60euro on a 'new' game (even more money when you buy a 'special edition'), with about 55% completion and it then you have to spend another 30euro on required dlc within the next 2-3 weeks. If you don't buy the dlc you won't be able to enjoy your game as much, because the content will be required for participating in the differend modes of the game, such as multiplayer. Dlc should be an addition to the game and a matter of choice, not the obligatory annuitant it is becoming now.
