My troll sense is tingling.

A flop is when a movie is financially unsuccessful. I admit, the reviews have me a tad worried.

It's not a flop but I do hope there is only going to be two movies.

It's was confirmed long ago that there are going to be three movies. It can work will the amount of additional lore Tolkien added with the Return of the King appendices.

The problem is The Hobbit as a book sucks anyways. I knew the movie wasn't going to be that great compared to the LOTR trilogy.

If it weren't for The Hobbit, we wouldn't have The Lord of the Rings. If we didn't have The Lord of the Rings, the fantasy genre wouldn't have become such a big thing. So no, it doens't "suck". The worst you can say is that it's okay at best.

Nobody says, "Read the Hobbit first".

Everyone says to read The Hobbit first...

Glory and fame, blood is our name!
Souls full of thunder, hearts of steel!
Killers of men, a warrior's friend!
Sworn to avenge our fallen brothers!
Sons of the gods, today we shall die.
Open Valhalla's door!
Let the battle begin, with swords in the wind! Hail Gods of War!

They won't be as bad as George Lucas' prequels. I'm pretty sure that's a quantifiable fact.

Isn't a 70 actually pretty decent by movie standards?

I thought the Hobbit book was pretty boring, so I'm not expecting the movies to be fantastic...especially since they're stretching it to 3 films.

  • 12.07.2012 3:02 PM PDT

Honestly I hope it bombs (it won't) because they're really milking a book that was shorter than any of the LoTR books and making THREE movies out of it somehow. For my money the animated version was/is better.

It's a disappointment to the 90's all three Lord of the Rings movies got.

Disregard Females, acquire currency.

The only review that matters is the one I give.

Content from the appendices of The Return of the King are being added to expand Thorin's family backstory, explain Gandalf's journeys outside of the Company, and to fill in the details that connect The Lord of the Rings to The Hobbit. But of course, money is another reason.

The one thing about reviews is that they're trying to find something negative about the movie.
You are dead WRONG!
The largest misconception about reviews of games and movies and other pieces of entertainment is that all reviewers are somehow inherently biased because their opinions conflict with those of the masses. This couldn't be further from the truth.

Reviewers are not common people like you see at school, at work, or on this forum. If they are film reviewers, they have watched hundreds if not thousands of movies from every genre imaginable. They judge films against a MUCH broader variety of other films than the other viewer has watched, and THAT'S why huge blockbusters which may make great money at the box office sometimes don't get very good reviews.

Ignorance is not a positive virtue. I'm not asking you all to unquestionably respect the views of all reviewers, but at LEAST consider the fact that it's their JOB to know more about the stuff than you do and so their opinions will naturally tend to differ from what the masses say.

If you continue to disagree with reviewers then please, please, PLEASE: by all means apply to become a reviewer yourself! EVERYBODY wants to hear your opinion because NOBODY wants to pay to see a movie they know nothing about.

"So- So this means Im just going to be miserable for the rest of time?!"

"No. This means that you have to live life to the fullest. You have one life, live it well. Make sure you die without regrets. Get a new life, new mate, new family. You, out of all people, don't deserve a terrible fate of misery like that. Having nothing to look forward to is good. It makes sure you want to keep on going. Living is a right, not a privilege."

None of you seriously have any idea what you're talking about.

Seriously. This is pathetic.

Pff, the Fellowship of the Ring wasn't that great of a movie either in my opinion. The two others were fantastic though.

Actually most reviewers are hired by a media outlook simply because they have a degree in journalism or writing, plus have some experience in the field. The general idea behind movie reviewers is to generate interest from the public. Thus, they are searching for increased traffic to their website, television network, or a purchase of their company's newspaper/magazine. This is 2012, the media is controlled by money and business. If you think movie reviewers have a superior opinion then that is your opinion. However, after taking a few PR and Marketing courses you quickly learn the media is rarely doing something good for the public over helping themselves out financially.

My point is half of those critic reviews are of the same essence as Video Game reviews. People will rate a movie based off personal opinion, biases, and how it benefits them. Its sad, but true.

*facepalm* NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! THERE'S your problem! Not every entity out there is a money-hungry corporation eager for a better profit margin through lying and cheating and stealing, like PR and Marketing would make you believe.

I'm a journalism major and a senior in college. Please, for the love of God, don't write off the world of journalism as just another corporation. The industry may be having hard times due to a bad recession and changing technologies and business models, but we still defend our independence and our desire to keep people informed first and foremost with tribal ferocity.

I know that whenever I've reviewed video games or movies or plays, I've always done so in a strictly unbiased manner. I don't praise a game just because I personally enjoy it... that would defeat the entire purpose of writing a review in the first place: TO INFORM PEOPLE!

So reviews determine whether a film is a "flop" or not?

Rotten Tomatoes nonetheless?
