Two makes there more than speakers.
When I was younger I just played games because I could. Some I found fun, some I found boring. One of the main reasons I became a competitive player is because of online capabilities and how much effort is being put into Multiplayer these days. I didn't start to notice it until about a few months into Halo 3, where I started caring about how good I was doing because besides that it got kind of dull just playing.
I still try to find fun in games, both competitive and casually. But I just find it more thrilling now to be put through challenges than to just have the game play for me.
Also, I doubt children would complain about easy game mechanics and balancing if it helped them (which is still present in some gamers).
