Proud member of the Herd

I don't see your point.

Games have evolved, so has its audience.

Games are now more competitive, pitting you against other players, a stat system seemed necessary.

The hardcore gaming community (For the most part) cares about things like KD and Win/lose ratio because they use those things to label a player "good" or "bad"

Do you really need this explained?

I am a pharmaceutical scientist. I received my Masters degree in Pharmaceutics from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in 2010, after working as a Pharmacist for 4 years. I currently work in King of Prussia, PA, and focus on the analytical chemistry of small molecule APIs. My clients include some of the most well known big pharma companies in the world.

So why do we care all of a sudden about that now?
Because online competition is the norm now. There really is no "beating the game" so people use K/D as the measuring stick of progress.

"There's a very fine line between not listening, and not caring. I'd like to think that I walk that line every day."

No . . .

But I've always played on the easiest difficulty, even now.

I did not. We played for fun, not for stat's. We knew we weren't athletes and didn't try to act like them.
Exactly. We are now like the jocks of video games.

I don't get why people have the idea that playing competitively automatically makes someone a thick headed bigot.
Some people I think may cry and scream about K/D and buffing and nerfing and whatnot. Just like jocks will be complaining on and on about sports and how the other team cheated. Gamers like us will scream that they're hacking. See the similarities?
Everyone complains. You're just pitting it more towards the competitive community because of how they're generally viewed. And an actual competitive player who knows what they're doing and how the game(s) work won't just yell out "hacker" whenever they die. Those are the people who are just mad because they don't know how to play then just trash talk.

He threw down a glove you made the mistake
Of picking it up now you're gone
The choosing of guns or fighting with swords
The choice of weapons is done
He'll tear you apart as soon as you start
You know you don't have a chance.

K/D in Zelda, Mario, Goldeneye, Castlevania? Daf-.

On the Left

Godshatter: I can go all the way with someone without being attracted to them.
CamCamm: How does that work?
Godshatter: I'm easily aroused by anything that moves. It's a curse.
Brain says 'No, that's ugly', body says 'ugly is fine with me'.

Call me Rdog, not RdOG or RdOG1507. I made that username when I thought it was cool to use alternating capital and lowercase letters...

Video games such as Zelda, Mario, Goldeneye, Doom, Castlevania, and other games like that, did you care about your K/D? What your rank was, if the game had one? Did you care about the quality of the game's multiplayer? Did you scream, "Gyorg is to powerful! He needs to be nerfed!" or if Mario needed a buff? I assume you didn't say stuff like that.

So why do we care all of a sudden about that now?

And it's funny how so many people think those games are leagues ahead of today's games. I think they just got more hardcore and played games less for fun and more for sport.

If you see this post in your topic I'm sorry to tell you but your topic is dying.

Only Goldeneye has multiplayer on that list. Castlevania Harmony of Despair has balancing issues that I wish would be fixed.

The reason we care now is because they started existing recently.

-I was here

All I cared about was the level of my Pokemon team. I still don't give a rat's ass about K/D ratios though.

~:O>~~

Kids who grew up gaming and continued to do so out of this misplaced sense of ownership and pride over their overall performance on that particular game... the energy and drive that would otherwise be directed to attracting and gaining mates and socializing is put in the form of gaming competitively.

When you were a baby you used to giggle and laugh for hours on end when we jingled keys in your face. Whatever happened to that?

Stop arguing over imaginary -blam!-. May as well argue over Santa Claus. There will never be proof that there is/was a god - and before people start saying "HERP DERP PROVE THERE WASN'T ONE ROFLOLOL" well, you are the people who made it up in the first place so we know there isn't one
What created the big bang then? A coalition of genetically modified TR-909s with extra distortion?

I was 9 and had an undeveloped taste.

If you get a chance to talk to K-Mart, tell him Mabian misses him...

He won't remember me, but it's always nice to let a complete stranger on the internet know that you care.

Sir I can't help but get the sense that you don't want to really talk about this, you want to "nail" me.

I wasn't competitive when I was 9.

Multiplayer consisted of playing with cousins and friends.

K/D spread didn't mean anything. As long as I killed them! Muahahaha

Really, my cousins would cheat in goldeneye and lock themselves in the bathroom in such a way that it was nearly impossible to kill them. I think my k/d spread was something like 1-5634634307.

Real account.

Join me as we make new friends from different communities!

If you assign every letter of the alphabet a number, a is 1, b is 2, etc., and you take all of the values of the word "MATH", and add them, you get 42. So math is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything.

I assume you didn't say stuff like that.
No, but I was yelling at Puff N' Huff.

  • 12.04.2012 1:11 PM PDT

Well then, you somehow found my signature, nice job, so time for your prize.............FLOODIANS! ATTACK! Also, those socks do NOT make you look handsome.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 had one, but I never paid attention to it. I just played the game for fun.

I did get kinda mad that in Star Wars Battlefront 1, where you couldn't kill your leader (jedi or sith character), but that never annoyed me too much.

When playing pokemon I wished that HM Moves didn't count toward your 4 pokemon moves so I didn't have to waste a slot on a HM Slave.

  • 12.04.2012 1:14 PM PDT

When I was 9 games didn't have a k/d ratio.
