Subject: Global Warming

You better believe in it and make pro ecological life choices.

First paragraph from wikipedia:

Global warming is the rise in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans since the late 19th century and its projected continuation. Since the early 20th century, Earth's mean surface temperature has increased by about 0.8 °C (1.4 °F), with about two-thirds of the increase occurring since 1980.[2] Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and scientists are more than 90% certain that it is primarily caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases produced by human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation.[3][4][5][6] These findings are recognized by the national science academies of all major industrialized nations.

It just got me thinking (again) since we're in December and it was legit warm enough for t-shirt and shorts. Scary, if you ask me.

What have you done to help the environment?

I know everything, I've just forgotten most of it.

Also, my XBL Gamertag is 'Wenggh', not 'A Stolen Fruit'.

Really?

It's December and the weather's absolutely terrible and it's cold!

So much for Summer.

Baby seals are out of control here in Canada, eating lots of fish and ruining the environment.

Last year I clubbed about 25 of them to death. You're welcome!

  • 12.04.2012 6:48 PM PDT

Flood Kids? Lol.

I live fairly far south in Ontario, and I got half a metre of snow and it's in the negatives outside. I'm not worried right now. It's not scary.

It doesn't matter, on a large scale there is nothing we can do to prevent it. There is also no proof that this isn't a natural thing the earth does.

  • 12.04.2012 6:48 PM PDT

O no! Within a few thousands of years the earth will be uninhabitable!

I harvest trees and plant new ones in their place to store carbon in wood products and increase the carbon sequestering ability of well managed forests.

Thereby creating usefull renewable building product for humanity and scrubbing the atmosphere as well.

You look around. You fire your weapon before you realize.
Its just me. I fall and you walk up. You cry why.
When i pop up. You look at me in wonder. I say,"ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL."
You bend to my will and go to a cliff, walk off, and fall.
The last thing you hear is me stating as fact,"All will fail the battle of life, you just went early"

I stopped caring at Global Cooling.

The result is that - we get hotter and hotter summers and colder and colder winters. (in the temperate oceanic climate anyway)

Where the hell are you? I'm in Kitchener/Waterloo and we've been getting light rain. We had some snow on Friday, then it rained Saturday and washed it all away.

There have been natural rises and falls, but not on the scale that it is now. Geographers can get ice samples from deep withing the Antarctic ice masses. These samples may contain trapped air, which is then analysed to see what kind of gas composition it was way back in time. By comparing it to the gas composition of air today, they establish that things were very much different without human interference.

Oh no the weather is changing! Its called seasons. Also, the hydrologic cycle explains "global warming" fine.

No i'm serious. Protecting our environment is an international affair that ranks probably top 10 in importance. I still can't see why people refuse to acknowledge what's happening to our planet and how we've been negatively contributing to it. Even in this first paragraph I posted it tells you that the temperature has been increasing exponentially since the 1980s.

All major industrialized nations acknowledge it.

What is so damn hard to comprehend?

I personally dont believe in global warming. I believe that the Earth undergoes cycles of warming and cooling but thats just me :)

Although I do agree that it is really hot for it to be December right now.

The ratios are all wrong, and yes, there is proof that part of the recent warming trend has been directly linked to our species. The hydrofluorocarbons that have been banned in most countries have a GWP, global warming potential, that is thousands of times greater than CO2. Methane is about 80 times more potent.

It is silly to ignore available evidence and claims it doesn't exist, simply because you haven't read it.

The science behind it, OP. Most people don't understand that the "greenhouse effect" is a function of simple chemistry involving bond dipoles in atoms. The argument for human-affected global warming must also reference the difference between man-made (anthropogenic) and natural sources. The Earth does warm and cool, and to some effect that is because of climate patterns, or biological diversity, but the most recent phenomenon we're seeing is anything but natural.
