Subject: I need ideas for a book.

I've been brainstorming ideas for a book for almost a year now. I've only begun studying for my book just recently when I've been able to actually buy books to study for my book. Such books include fantasy books to get the general idea on how to write a fantasy book, also history books on ancient societies to learn the environment in which to describe inside my book. (still need some books on nature)

In short I need some ideas for a 11th-12th century era type of book. Or rather I want to review outside ideas of what an 11th-12th century based fantasy book would be like. Cultures include Roman, Persian/Arabic, Celtic/Germanic, and an india-african Culture.

Your help has been substantial, I'll be sure to honor you in my book.

I recommend you go to historum, it's a forum, in there you can ask for books about those civilizations and they'll answer with very good books, since a lot of them are historians.

Also, it will be hard to find many books about Celtic/Germanic societies because most didn't leave writings behind.

Inappropriate. Went a little to far with the butt hole tearing.

Why not dark ages instead?

Why would you pick the setting if you don't know what the story is about yet?

The dark ages seem very limiting.

Really? I see it as the opposite. You'd have more freedom.

You realize that a lot of people choose when they want their story to be beforehand right? Say I don't have an idea for a story, but I want it to be in the future; like I want to write sci fi.

It's seems silly to pick a setting without a story. I'd always start with the story first, and place it in a setting that would help me drive it the way i want it to go.

I know everything, I've just forgotten most of it.

Also, my XBL Gamertag is 'Wenggh', not 'A Stolen Fruit'.

The story of a man who discovers an ancient Relic that disproves the existence of a Deity as we know it, the man keeps it a secret, until the local Church finds out about it, and the man sets out on a journey to keep the Relic out of their hands and find a way to overthrow the Church and create a new world, and makes an Alternate timeline to this one or something.

I agree with you to an extent. But some people want to write a story, don't have an idea yet, and pick a setting so they might get some sort of inspiration.

And i could definitely see that working at times, i pick the setting immediately after i get the very basis of the plot so that it will continue to drive and house the plot in a way that make sense, but that doesn't seem to be the case for the OP's book.

Back OT, i don't really know anything about those cultures or times, OP. Alchemy is really interesting though. If it's relevant to any of your possible settings, give it a look.

How about a story about a fictional person in Sparta going through his training years and how he fought and died at the Battle of Thermopylae?

The dark ages seem very limiting.

How so? It almost spans a thousand years, there are plenty of important events happening all around the world that influence the civilizations you want to talk about.

-Romans:
The decline of the city and the western part
How they culture shifted towards Greek culture
The continuous fighting with Sassanid Persia
All the plotting and going on by some of the most interesting dynasties ever
The many invasions, starting with the Germanic and Slavic tribes, culminating with the rise of Islam and the Seljuks, Oghuz and Ottomans later on

-Persia:
How they had a feudalistic society long before anyone
Their relationships with China
How it transformed from a Zoroastrian Empire to a Islamized one
How the Turkic peoples changed the environment and initially devastated Persia
The mongol invasions
Its wars with Rome

-Germans:
The transition from petty tribes to great kingdoms
The Holy Roman Empire
The Franks, Charlemagne and the Pope's increasing influence
Viking Age and the Varangians in Rome
The Crusades

-Africa:
Moorish and Magrhebi invasions of Hispania
Taifas, Asturias and Reconquista
The fall of Abyssinia
Nubian interactions with Fatimid and Ayyubid Egypt
Egyptian invasions after the truce is broken by the Mamelukes and how Nubian culture pretty much extinguished
Spread of Islam in Abyssinia and "Ethiopian Dark Ages"
The Mali empire and the Tuareg caravans
Trans-Saharan trade

Etc, etc.

You have plenty of stuff to play with, I say the Dark Ages is the best setting.

1. It's a complete fantasy only taking the foundation and some structure of culture and civilization from reality.

2. It's not historical

3. I wouldn't write a fantasy book about history. Loads of people already do that.

Limiting as in I'd have to abide by historical events. In this fantasy book. I can create a new world.
