Subject: Roman spartan vs Gladiator.

You look around. You fire your weapon before you realize.
Its just me. I fall and you walk up. You cry why.
When i pop up. You look at me in wonder. I say,"ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL."
You bend to my will and go to a cliff, walk off, and fall.
The last thing you hear is me stating as fact,"All will fail the battle of life, you just went early"

Spartans were the citizens and soldiers of Sparta, which was in Greece.

Greeks called themselves Romans well into the 18th century, and most nationalists didn't want a free Greece, but rather a free Rome (Greece).

But, were they "Romans" in the time of the Spartans?

When is that "time"?

Sparta emerged in the 10th Century B.C. what time are you speaking of?

The time period of when Spartans were the best soldiers in the world. When Sparta was a city-state.

Spartans were Greek.

So were the Romans.
lolno. lrn2history.

No, you learn history.

The Roman conquerors got absorbed into Greek culture just as the Arabs were absorbed into Persian culture.

Justinian was the last Roman Emperor to speak Latin, and even he had adopted Greek as his primary language. All scripts were done in Greek, their empire was Greek, they followed Greek Orthodoxy, the elite spoke Greek, their soldiers were Greek.

Rome became Greek by the 6th century.

Entirely depends on the specific Gladiator and Spartan. Each fighting "class" did not share EXACTLY common experience and skill with one another so there's really no way to tell. And you never told us about the setting (I'm assuming an arena), what they're wearing, what they're using, how old they are, etc.

That's the case with versus threads, which is why they all suck.

Back then Rome was still Latin, and Sparta Hellenic.

Then it would be correct to say that the Spartans were Greek Spartans.

Hmm. I don't know history. I'm an engineering major.

So am I.

It is OK to not know history, since it's not really essential, however to hide behind the fact that you're studying engineering doesn't justify it. You should have not even mentioned that as it is irrelevant.

??? Didn't Rome 'fall' in the 400s?
Unless your talking about the eastern empire, they were known as the byzantines

Nobody knew them as Byzantines, that term appeared during the 19th century.

The Greeks called themselves Rome.

Arabs, Persians, Armenians, Georgians, Romanians, East Slavs, Turks, Mongols, Ethiopians, and Cumans knew them as Rome.

The Catholic Christians knew them as the Empire of the Greeks because the Germans had their Holy Roman Empire.

There was never a "Byzantine Empire"

Rome was only a city in the Roman Empire. The fall of the Roman Empire was a gradual process that culminated in 1453.

nobody then knew them as that, but just calling them that now makes it so much less confusing for people.

I also love the holy roman empire, it wasn't holy, nor roman, or an empire. They don't name stuff like they used to

Also, I put fall into ' ' because after the raid in 426 I want to say, it wasnt much of an empire and what was left was in free fall dragging Europe head first into the dark ages

But is wrong, no matter how confusing it might be the "Byzantine Empire" was Rome.

The HRE wasn't holy at all, but I'm sure it's just a typo.

Only the Western part fell after the fall of the city, Sicily, Cyrenaica, Egypt, the Levant, Greece and Anatolia remained strong until the Arabs showed up.

KOTOR

The Greeks never viewed themselves as Romans. They viewed themselves a Greeks subjugated by Romans, and thus, Roman by virtue of rule of conquest, but they still regarded themselves as Hellenic.
