Subject: Question for My Story

Ignore my gamertag. It's actually Dragonzzilla.

One of the main driving themes in my fantasy story is realism. Of course, it being fantasy and all, I may have to bend the rules here and there but there are some questions I can't decide on. I wanted to see what you guys would like in this hypothetical world.

1) Should there be magic? If so, what kind?
2) Should there be unworldly beings? If so, how should that be controlled?
3) Should everything have an explainable solution? This links back to Questions 2 and 3.

Yes, sure and absolutely.

  • 12.04.2012 9:08 PM PDT

1. Friendship magic.
2. Aliens, man.
3. Yes, just to make it harder for you.

The explanations aren't really that hard but I'm no scientist so I can't give a full-scale scientific explanation. I can make accurate guesses, do research and put it into layman's terms.

1. no magic.
2. murderous aliens.
3. Yes, just to make it harder for you.

I like how the Bartimaeus trilogy did it. The magicians themselves were completely powerless and all the magic came from ensnared spirits.

Aliens as in exterrestrial beings or just practical aliens?

Per Audacia Ad Astra

1. No.
2. Yes. Not too far-fetched.
3. Yes, or plot holes.

The Universe demands to be noticed, to be seen, and dutifully noted.

What use all those incredible firework dimensions if no eye fixes and reflects, no brain takes notes, no heart moves with passion at the display?

NASA answers the silent cry of the Cosmos for recognition.

NASA is the witness and we fellow witnesses to the endless deeps.

Once everything has an explainable solution the genre becomes science fiction. So, if you're trying to keep in the fantasy realm, none of the mystical powers needs a scientifically acceptable solution.

Regarding Question 2... how does that work? Not too far-fecthed, what does that mean? Not hating on your opinion, I just want elaboration.

you could have both. like aliens living on the planet with humans, and then aliens from another planet decide to invade.

There should be magic, but it should be frowned upon and only shady characters use it.
I think there should but nothing to weird.
No, it's better to leave to the reader to make his own conclusions, until the last chapter, in which everything explains itself.

Inappropriate. Went a little to far with the butt hole tearing.

The rules of your universe don't have to all be explained, but your characters need to be relate-able and rational.

If you achieve that, then you have enough realism.

You don't need to explain everything, but having clear and permanent rules within the universe for which all world-logic is derived from and never breaking those rules within the story is definitely recommended, that way you don't create plot-holes or are forced to introduce a deus ex machina. Also, make sure to plan things out and never write yourself into a corner where a deus ex machina is needed to escape from. See: the Mass Effect trilogy.

Mreh.

1. Sure, but not the kind where there are wizards tossing fireballs at each other, make it more subtle.
2.I had an idea for these five deity-ish characters, they were essentially the monarchs of a certain kind or group of animals.(i.e. The Raven Lord(crows were also among his subjects), The Ursine Warlord, The Eagle King(was the leader of the group, Hawks also members of his court), The Wolf Chief(Foxes were under his jurisdiction as well), etc.) They ended up sort of being like the Istari from Lord of the Rings but they didn't have any real reason for being there, they would fight among themselves and turn mortals into their servants in exchange for immortality.
3.Not necessarily, you can explain as much as you want and leave the rest to the reader's imagination.

But my story is about a civil war the protagonist inadvertently causes (which was already reaching a climax anyway) because he brings news from his home country being invaded by a dominating almost-alien force. The country's government shacks themselves up and starts cracking down on the (at the time) unsteady-peaceful rebels in order to establish a strong united community that'll be able to survive the approaching invasion. The rebels, of course, fight back as this is clearly the sign of war and their last chance to revolutionize the country.

Not very rational, is it?

The reader.

What you want is the reader believe the actions of the protagonist.

"If I was in the same situation, how would I react?"

You show the thought process, emotions, and eventual decisions and actions of the protagonist in order to convince the reader to accept the fiction you've created. This enables them to immerse themselves into the story and enjoy it.
