At the start of 343 Guilty Spark, you exit the Pelican and you can see a crashed Pelican, with a scary message being repeated in a loop. Now, "Halo: The Flood" claims that it is Cpt Keyes' dropship, that had technical difflculties. Now, I was busy demonstrating to the heretics of the PS2 our superority, when I noticed something odd. In Jenkins' HelmetCam, when the Marines exit the dropship you can see the crashed ship, yet Capt Keyes arrived AFTER them. "Wait here for the Cpt and his squad, then get your a$$ inside"
That means that there was another squad, who could have got there before the ones we know about (Sgt Johnson's squad and Keyes' squad), which could explain how the flood seemed to have a lot more ex-human Combat forms than the number of peopole in the squad would suggest

Any ideas, or is it just my addled British brain going mad from having to wait 172800 seconds more for Halo 2

The thing you have to realize is that if they only put in the ammount of flood equal to the ammount of marines killed the game would be pretty boring.... I mean comeon you kill more marine combat forms of the flood in the library alone than there were on the entire pillar of autumn.

i have heard of a theory that Col Acerson found Halo before the Pillar of autum made the blind jump so mabey thats where the dropship came from.
