Since I'm posting this the forum of a gaming website I'm sure everyone is familiar with the concept of threatening messages send across xbox live in wich the receiver is challenged to give their name/adress/info in order to fight the sender in real life instead of the virtual battlefield.

These messages and their intentions vastly predate the xbox live feature but I am curious.

What drives people to send these messages, often masculine in format and imbued with terror and hatred? Is it a blind moment of pure rage, perhaps fear? Perhaps it's the last resort, a tormenting cry of not accepting defeat and thus changing the rules and content of the game to another dimension; in this case the real world?

I'm here to find out flood. I'm pretty sure you've ever been in one of these 'glorious internet arena deathmatches' be it either in the left corner, the challenger, or the right corner, defender of the title.

Please share your experiences and elaborate. Did you enjoy sending them? Why did you send them? Did you enjoy receiving them? How far did you go? Have you ever replied seriously?

I never do that becuase I'm not 5 years old or have the mentality of one.

EDIT: I did once gave a number to a guy threatening me. He was later arrested for threatening the LAPD force over the phone.

I don't send any because I can handle my rage unlike so many gamers. When I do get these messages, I laugh at them then block them without saying anything to them.

My DeviantArt Gallery - For my Photoshop stuff, go have a look!

I don't think I've ever had a message to fight someone IRL, but I imagine it's mainly kids trying to act tough to other kids.

Recon Number 54 -
If they are still looking, then while holding the snarl, I let drool start to drip from my mouth, I stand, curl my fingers into claws and with a hunched over crouch, I then make slow and deliberate steps towards them. When I get close enough, I let them hear my agonized and gasping growls and then, if they continue to stare, when I get within arm's reach? I kiss them on the nose, and run away giggling.

I like getting them, sending a <3 gets even more rage.

A competitive players main goal is to win.
A casuals main goal is to have fun regardless of whether that results in a win or loss.
It has nothing to do with individual skill or knowledge, it has to do with the reason you play.

I've never understood why people get so worked up over video games, sure stuff like team killing and such is very annoying, but I personally just quit the game and find another one if someone is bothering to a point that the game isn't enjoyable anymore.

I'll be honest and say, I'm good sniper on Battlefield, I play the objective and use bolt-actions, and a lot of people seem to have a problem with that, as I get massive amounts of hatemail for not using "skilled" weapons and "being -blam!- sniper". I don't answer to these people since they obviously are just mad and probably see how idiotic they were raging over a video game after they calm down.
I'll admit it, sometimes these people crack me up though.

The ones that where people threaten you with violence, makes me wonder why these people even play video games? I doubt they are enjoying the game if it seriously gets them so angry that they are wasting time by sending threats or insults to people they don't even know.

---"Small man have big mouth."

There was a time when if men had a problem with one another they solved it face to face. Now days boys talk -blam!- like cowards and gossip like females.

There are no men anymore.

I am a pharmaceutical scientist. I received my Masters degree in Pharmaceutics from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in 2010, after working as a Pharmacist for 4 years. I currently work in King of Prussia, PA, and focus on the analytical chemistry of small molecule APIs. My clients include some of the most well known big pharma companies in the world.

When they yell at me and say they would come to my house if they knew where I lived, I rattle off my address and phone number and nothing ever happens. They're all talk, no substance. I wish one of them would show up some time.
