Subject: Would anyone mind giving me some smartphone help? I'd appreciat...

I rule the midnight air, the destroyer, die by my hand, I am Creeping Death.

Hey guys, got a couple of questions about smartphones...I would appreciate serious answers.

Okay, so basically, I want to buy a smartphone but without the data plan and switch the SIM cards from my current phone and just use wifi and all around have a better phone. (mine is a piece of crap) I know you can do this as some of my family and friends have done it, I just can't afford the data plan atm and want this in the meantime.

I'm wondering what I should get, whether it be an Iphone 4 16G (would fit all my needs, enough memory for my general use, great app store for free texting, games, etc., can go online for wifi, etc.) or a samsung phone in the same price range (which I wouldn't know what to go for)

Also would it be fine to buy it used off of Ebay or Amazon or whatever, or should I just stick to new?

Any other comments/opinions?

tl;dr - should I get an iphone 4 or samsung phone w/o data plan, and get it used or new

Thanks Flood

Droid RAZR MAXX is sexy as hell. I love it. It fills all of my needs, and then some.

Also, I do NOT recommend buying a used phone off any website or anyone. Bad things happen.

Get a revamped iPhone 4 if you want something functional and cheapish.

I forgot to mention I use AT@T, so I would need to get a phone that I could just switch SIM cards with and essentially switch phones. Which I know Iphones can do and I'm pretty sure Samsung phones can too, my dad switched his with a samsung galaxy and my friend with an iphone 3g

Thanks though, not sure if you can do the same with that phone, why should I go for that over the iphone/galaxy or something?

It'll last you longer because it has a better battery life than the iPhone and Galaxy, it's (in my experience) more durable and resistant to damage, it's faster, it's got tons of free apps (you mentioned that you wanted that, right?)

I dunno about switching SIM cards. I never did that.

Get an iPhone 4S or 5. Definitely the easiest, most hassle free, best phones there are. I'd try and get a refurbished one off Apple, if there's not much of a difference in price, then get a new one.

Also, I don't know anyone who's ever had a data plan. Is that an American thing or something?

Iphone 5 has long since kept me satisfied. It does all you actually need in the world right now. NFC? We have passbook.

yeah thanks, free apps are cool :P

thanks man I'll look into if you can do the SIM card thing with that

and yeah basically just switch SIM cards, call AT@T and unlock the SIM card on the new phone and it works, just no data plan for internet, just goes off wifi but you can still call and all that (it's cool bc you can download free texting apps too)

and yeah it's American, pay for texting, online use, etc. :P it's expensive though lol so that's why I'm just doing this

Must be. In the US, you pay for minutes, texts, and data, separately. [that's the watered down version.] All smartphones on any US carrier require a data plan if you buy it from the carrier. No carrier offers unlimited data anymore, and the ones that do give you [X]gb, then you're throttled down to slow speeds.

idk what NFC or passbook is haha but thanks, seems like a lot of people are leaning towards the Iphone 4/s/5...I do like them and that's what I was leaning towards originally, seems great for general use

I'm a huge Android supporter, but since you know very little about smartphones, I'd advise you go for the iPhone. Any advantages of an Android phone and the Android development community would likely be lost on you.

Why not just get an iPod Touch or something if all you want is wifi? Seems stupid to get a smartphone and you can't even get data on it.

And besides, I know AT&T won't activate iPhones on their network without a data plan.

That's not going to work. As soon as you slap your SIM into the new phone, AT&T will see that the IMEI belongs to a smartphone and tack a data plan to your account. It's an automated process.

That's the word I was looking for, yeah.

  • 12.05.2012 10:43 AM PDT

Because of your idea of use for said phones, I would buy used because you'd probably have to pay full price from the phone companies in order to get the phone without a data plan and 2 year contract, etc. At least, from my assumptions.

I personally like Android phones, but that's me. Also, the app store for Android I believe is better.

Good question, so I won't have to carry an ipod and my phone around with me, and it's like an upgrade from an old itouch anyway getting an iphone 4/5 or the like

and yeah they will, my dad's done it, my friend's done it, just buy a smartphone AT@T compatible with SIM cards and switch them/unlock them

You're able to get that here, just not many people do. I usually buy a separate pack for five euro for seven hundred megabytes or so, and add euros to my overall balance. Where I come from, you pay for calls and texts, you don't just get a bunch of minutes or texts.

Wow, that's messed up. I haven't been with AT&T in a while...

That's a great point, thanks. I might buy it refurbished through Apple or the like, rather not risk buying one off Ebay/Amazon etc. :/

AT&T requires data on all smartphones. Period.

If they haven't gotten charged, they will.

One of the many reasons they rank lowest on the customer satisfaction surveys every year. Only reason I'm still with them is because their LTE coverage is great in my area.

I'll look into that...because my dad has had his for a long time and it hasn't shown up on the bill.
