Sorry if you've seen this thread before; But I need some help.
These are the points I have; Topic:
Should the United States wage war against foreign leaders who oppress their people?
Protecting human rights comes into competition with protecting economic development in developing countries.
Vietnam: US tried to prevent S. Vietnam from being taken by Communism, all we did was delay the inevitable.
America is not the worlds police
Our Constitution says we have the right to overthrow our OWN gov. if need be, not others.
Syria borders with Israel (U.S. Ally), Iraq (U.S. Ally), and Turkey (U.S. Ally & NATO member). So the result of the civil war could affect those nations. There are people being killed and tortured everyday, yet no intervention?
Russia and China both are heavily invested in Syria, whether it be weapons or resources. Directly intervening with Syria could cause a conflict with China and Russia. So the cons outweigh the pros.
This is precisely why China doesn't invade Taiwan, because if they do, the U.S., NATO, Australia, Japan, and South Korea will come to help.
If you want to go through the fundamentals. Every state has a Sovereign Right, which is a state's right, at least in principle, to do whatever it wants within its own territory. Traditionally, sovereignty is the most important international norm.
The main question for ANY invasion is; "What will we gain by invading?"
I need to write a paper too, that needs to be turned in and I can use during the debate
