About me: I am a vicious wolf of a man.

But really am sweet at heart. =)

We've got nine nuclear powered air craft carriers capable of holding 82+ combat aircraft, they've got one, and it's still in trials.

We wouldn't need to invade, just bombard their port cities and attack areas of strategic signifigance, including their army staging areas.

Long story short: yes, and anybody who says no has no clue what they're talking about.

No, and neither could they successfully invade us.

Yeah. Our navy would tear theirs apart. Oh, wait. They barely have one.

Successfully blockading the country isn't the same as invading.

lol, they can't even beat the taliban.
Were we trying to steamroll them we would have been finished years ago.. The Taliban make it very difficult to get anything done because they exploit our rules of engagement...they know we won't do certain things.

Absolutely. The only real advantage they have is numbers. With better technology and logistics, the US forces would reign supreme wherever there is naval or air superiority. In a toe-to-toe fight against another large military, the US has a chance to be much more cost effective than it has been over the last 40 years.

To all those saying no...

China JUST now landed their first aircraft on their first aircraft carrier. The United States has eleven aircraft carriers, all of which are FAR more advanced than China's hand-me-down from Russia.

The Chinese are only now developing their first fifth generation fighter (J-20) while the United States already has over 200 of them. This is not even counting aircraft such as the F-18.

As with World War II, the fight in the Pacific would be an engagement between navies and, like World War II, he who controls the carriers controls the war. China would not be able to go on the offensive and their navy destroyed in weeks.

From there it doesn't matter how many men they have (which is their only advantage). They would be forced to blending in with the population to avoid bombings (like Vietnam).

In essence, the Chinese are in no way prepared to go toe-to-toe with Washington and they know it. Have they had a military buildup? Yes. Is it on par with the American military? Not even close. Not remotely. Even Chinese economic momentum is beginning to slow.

America needs an enemy of sorts. It seems people WANT to be scared of the big bad wolf out there who is going to invade and instill dirty, nasty Communism. The Red Scare after World War II and now this "China will rule all!" because they have had brief economic fortunes which, by the way, were compared to an America in the middle of a recession.

Who's GDP still outnumbers all other major global economies? America's. Who has the biggest military? America. Who has seen the quickest recovery from the recession? Brazil, Germany, and 'Murcah.

These are simple facts. It all sounds overly-patriotic but it's true anyway. There is a reason no country has fought us toe-to-toe in over 70 years.

It's not liable to be that way forever but it's certainly that way now.

It seems you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

China would be incredibly hard to invade. They're investing in anti-ship missiles and coastal batteries for such a missile. Their logistics may suck and they couldn't launch an invasion of their own, but their domestic logistics are pretty damn good. They'd be able to defend any invading point.

Which brings me to this: Where the hell would you invade from? It'd be hard from the coast, thanks to their anti-ship missile defenses (along with other defenses), and there really isn't a land point to invade, thanks to their topography/geography.

The only way to make the invasion possible is to wipe out their coastal defenses and try to incite a domestic conflict (kinda like a civil war) along with the US v China fighting.

Yes. Considering most of their big cities are on the coast, the navy could just bombard the hell out of them. Block the ports, set up a no-fly zone, then send in ground forces to finish off any stragglers.

You forget about it's allies. Russia's really going to let america take china and be that close to their borders. It would most likely turn into a nuke fest.

We are determined that before the sun sets on this terrible struggle our flag will be recognized throughout the world as a symbol of freedom on the one hand and of overwhelming force on the other.

The war would boil down to China's ability to defend its major coastal metropolises from US Naval power. Their Anti-ship Ballistic Missile technology would be essential to staying in the game for a month at least. Without their ballistic missile supply we'd have them in weeks.

Now, could we beat them in a war? Yes.

Not when their ports are controlled and their people starving. Their 1,000,000+ ground army can't do anything to fight a superior air force. Again, Vietnam.

We did lose that war, yes, but not only did the NVC lose 4 times as many men we did control the country, which is what this thread is basically asking. I'm simply arguing the same could be done with China.

Can we control the population? No. We'd need popular opinion on our corner.

Russia, like China, has but one carrier and an even smaller ground military. They have a smaller air force and a smaller navy. The Russia of today is by no means the Russia from the 40's to the 80's.

And yes, they let us be close to their borders with Afghanistan.

Most of you need to read this.

There's no way we could have a successful ground invasion of China, but we could beat them in a war.
