Subject: Can you define progress?

Look. Progress is, simply, advancement towards a goal. We don't necessarily have to know about the goal or even that it is thereLMFAO. So by both inductive and/or deductive reasoning... Progress cannot be defined. You give me your opinion, slash into my "thought organization" and then become angry when I don't accept your subjective terms of progress?

You forgot the part- Only to collapse and recycle in biological terms, thus the rise and fall of civilizations. Humans don't know what progress is. Its a shot in the dark.

You look around. You fire your weapon before you realize.
Its just me. I fall and you walk up. You cry why.
When i pop up. You look at me in wonder. I say,"ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL."
You bend to my will and go to a cliff, walk off, and fall.
The last thing you hear is me stating as fact,"All will fail the battle of life, you just went early"

Are you stupid?

You know what, I don't really care. Just take your failed butthurt self and cry in a corner for all I care.

The opposite of congress?

The opposite of progress is "egress".

No, no please elaborate.
I'm not stupid. You just don't like rebuttal
I'm not "butthurt" I don't understand how that relates to anything we've conversed
and I thought you didn't care? But then again you are full of contradictions.
The only real evidence that can be used to establish a definition of progress is your "I made a goal and then I completed it"
How elementary... and It has no place in the universe beyond your own satisfaction and understanding of the human instinct of hunting and gathering
Even when I clearly state- Not using the noun or verb definition. Most of you gave such answers.

When I think of the word progress I think improvement. So if there has been improvement that is progress. That's what i'm basing my argument on. From the day we are born to our last breath we improve individual. We crawl and improve to walk. We talk and improve to read and write too. We improve our logic system (brain/mind) through school, reading stuff on the internet (flood :) ), deductive reasoning. We apply our knowledge science projects and such. So since our lives are based around improvement our societies are too. Animals are born with instincts some don't even learn in their entire lifespans and live off instinct. We learn and adapt as I said above. So our society has been a reflection of our individual lives. Started out as a tribe with a life expectancy of around 40 or even 30. To today's with planes, computers, cars, social networking with a life expectancy of 80 years. All this is on the rise too. As you mentioned short term memory is becoming more important but that also drives us forward, since we want to do everything faster better, more efficient we must improve and thus progress to a next stage. Also there will always be long term thinkers even if its becoming a minority and one person can change the world, Einstein, Newton, Darwin, etc, All single handedly advanced science which seems to be what moves us forward today, everything runs on its principles including the economy, art, and everyday ideas.

Very constructive response. Glad to see some thought put into words here. I agree with various points of yours, but I also have the big problem of the universe. If the universe is truly never ending- What good does it do to keep accumulating ideas and compounding ancestry if its all so transparent when related to the old "grand scheme" of things? Do you think this makes humans God-like because they can attempt to give the illusion to themselves as a species that they are making progress? Or is the equation always balanced with a negative and we end up depleting our world by making said progress? In such case, how terribly tragic... Our lives would be ironic, yet petty

"If you want to test a man's character, give him power" -- Abraham Lincoln

Progress is not always in a forward moving direction.

  • 12.05.2012 9:07 PM PDT

Progress is when you move forward.
Towards a destination, goal in life, etc.

  • 12.05.2012 9:07 PM PDT

Wow that is quite sad and depressing. To me the Universe is not as transparent as you say, there are thousands of unexplained anomalies that can be seen through the telescope any of those could potentially give greater meaning to our lives. Also the possibility of other sentient life out there is something worthwhile too combining the total knowledge of multiple sentient lifeforms could be something awakening. Its always nice to think of the next possibility, myself looking through a scientific viewpoint. Even if it is an illusion its better to live in a fantasy then in a grey room where everything is essentially known. I also think by the time we deplete our planet of natural resources we will have more than enough to move on to other world and the technology to do it. Its not really that optimistic either. Although it is possible to believe at the rate of our progress everything will be discovered and nothing will really matter. I think little things will always matter like that guys who joked about the coffee machine, I would think it makes life meaningful to enjoy the sensations of a nice cup of coffee.

The Universe demands to be noticed, to be seen, and dutifully noted.

What use all those incredible firework dimensions if no eye fixes and reflects, no brain takes notes, no heart moves with passion at the display?

NASA answers the silent cry of the Cosmos for recognition.

NASA is the witness and we fellow witnesses to the endless deeps.

Progress is a slippery thing whose definition tends to be pounced upon by pedants. But I'll give my two cents - humanity's progress is an advancement from the current state to a state in which we obtain a greater understanding of the universe and its workings - which in turn, leads to greater advances in technology and the associated impact in an individual;s life.

I would say that the only realistic manner for humanity as a species at this point in time to progress is the advancement of our scientific disciplines - any philosophical/religious breakthroughs aren't going fully adopted to the extent that scientific breakthroughs are adopted and have less of an impact.

I would like to think that scientific and philosophical achievement have been the defining elements of humanity as a whole and agree with Bruce Sterling's 'Swarm' - in ten thousand years we will either end up as gods or machines - whether this is a favourable outcome is debatable, but it is most certainly progress from our current state.
