You didn't seem to catch his bias.
He is attacking the game from a balanced and competitive standpoint. That is where the game is broken, but that is because it isn't designed to be "balanced" and "competitive".
In other words, it really doesn't have a skill gap.
The real problem in his argument is rating it as a "competitive" game in the first place. He is essentially bashing the game for what it isn't.
In other words, blind hate.
However, it is undeniable what the game has done to the FPS genre as a whole.
I am actually disappointed with this game, and it is the first TreyArch game that I am disappointed with.
IMO.
As for what the game "has done to the FPS genre", im confused by what you mean. CoD represents a change in market direction. As multiplayer gaming becomes more popular, it is less about the underground society that focuses on stats, and competition, and more about lots of people joining in to have fun at somethign they play. If this creates a more "casual" experience, then so be it. If other games want to be able to sell, then they have to include this experience, though ideally on top of a competitive one. If they don't, that's the fault of the developers, not CoD as a franchise.
OT: That's really cool. Hopefully I can pick up a copy soon.
But that's what I don't understand. How can a game like COD stay relevant in the consumer populace?. Competition is in the name. It's what the FPS entails. If it can't even deliver that, what's the drive in continuing to play for years on end? Casual play is simply a style of play when referencing FPS games. You can play in a relaxed manner, but the aim of the game is the same: best your opponent. You can't even have this casual premise without the framework to provide it.
That's why I thought Halo 3 was so beautiful. It catered, rather successfully, to the competitive and the casual gamer. Simply by providing two camps with the same gameplay, but different "atmoshpere." It's the same gameplay, meaning that aspects of competitive fps are in both camps.
