Subject: Far Cry 3: A Model for Successful Games

Expressing my strong liberal views without shame. Favorite quotes below:

"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe."
"One starts to live when he can live outside himself."

- Albert Einstein

I recently bought Far Cry 3 upon seeing some of its stellar reviews and wanting to shift away from the linear games I've been engaged with lately (Halo 4) and waiting to play a fun open world game.

I have never played a previous Far Cry and wasn't anticipating Far Cry 3 at all.

Needless to say, this game, from the first few hours I've invested into it, is phenomenal. While I haven't beaten the game's main story (in fact, I have only done one main mission after being set free), I've done a lot of hunting, crafting, sidequests, and general pirate killing.

Far Cry 3 succeeds where so many other games, and many times shooters, fail: it does away with the portions of gameplay that I don't enjoy playing in shooters and focuses all of its power into the enjoyable parts of any game: killing, exploring, creating, and progressing. Oddly enough, this is a type of review I read on metacritic as well, so it seems others share my sentiment.

Also, the game, so far at least, has never taken me out of the first person perspective. This really adds an immersive level to the game overall, especially during the cutscenes and platforming sequences.

So far, this is some of the most fun I've had all year; Far Cry 3 is definitely a GoTY contender (so far) in my books.

What do you guys think? What do you like? Dislike?

-blam!- awesome game.

Thank god Ubisoft put in fast travel. Farcry 2 sucked so much because the long distances you had to move around.

It's a fantastic game. I am not done yet and I've invested a day into since it's release Tuesday.

The story is fantastic. A fresh faced kid essentially turning into what he sets out to destroy.

Coupled with interesting characters, excellent gun play (one thing Far Cry 2 did right), and great physics. It's probably my game of the year. Just beating out Dishonored.

I've never gotten a Far Cry game, and the only reason I never randomly bought it was because it advertised itself on Youtube as, and I quote "Skyrim with Guns". I kind of got tired of playing Skyrim, so...

I want it really badly and I could go get it right now but I think I'm going to hold off untill I get a PC.

this kind of summarises the game quite nicely should give you some clearer thoughts on the game.

Just to let you know, I am running it on medium on a store bought machine with a dated Nvidia 550ti graphics card. Even on Medium the game is gorgeous.

Don't LOL if you aren't L'inOL.

Halo: Reach
Halo 3
Halo ODST

I dunno. The only people i've seen anywhere who have said they've played it is on the Flood...

I agree with OP: The campaign makes it a clear GOTY candidate. I only wish it had a just as awesome multiplayer...

I've been playing Halo since 2002. My earliest memories include hiding at the shotgun window on Damnation and killing my dad with grenades while playing co-op on Pillar of Autumn.

I want Ubisoft to leave.

Those graphics are gorgeous. Just being in this thread makes me want to go to gamestop and buy it right now.

Does anyone have if for console? How are the graphics and gameplay? Any issues with the game?

If I ever get AIDS, I'm going to sleep with another AIDS person so my AIDS cancel each other out, or I'm going to make the AIDS I already have worse.

Installing it right meow:3 so -blam!- excited to make my awesome Far Cry 2 maps for this game, oh and perhaps the single best campaign in recent memory. Also a lesson to other games, look at Far Cry 3 from Far Cry 2 that's the improvement you should look for.

Yes. Not bad. Great. No.

Far Cry 3 is basically Far Cry 2, but with fixed AI and with more in-depth features that we asked for (hunting, not all-knowing AI, crafting, no malaria pills, better save/fast travel system, etc)

Have it for Xbox and it looks pretty good.
Better than H4 at least... which is ridiculously overrated in terms of visuals.

I'm surprised it's been getting such great reviews considering how average Far Cry 2 apparently was. I've never played anything in the Far Cry / Crysis series, but I might have to look into it now.

I'm tempted to try it out because of the good reviews, but...

...from what I've seen, it seems too similar to Spec Ops: The Line. If any of you have played Spec Ops, and can confirm that the stories are very different from each other, I would me much more interested.

I've not played Spec Ops, so I can't comment on that.

More of a normal kid kinda going insane.

I've only played ten minutes of it pre-release, but I'm planning on getting it. Although I don't think I ever finished Farcry: Instincts..

Most of Far Cry 2's reviews were along the lines of "Great ideas and features, but the mechanics and gameplay are buggy or frustrating or broken".

  • 12.06.2012 12:35 PM PDT

Far Cry 3 is a great game, I absolutely loved the long campaign (It took me at least 11 hours to complete) and I still play it! I love going around hunting animals, killing the "baddies" and pretty much everything else!

9/10 would bang.
