I recently bought Far Cry 3 upon seeing some of its stellar reviews and wanting to shift away from the linear games I've been engaged with lately (Halo 4) and waiting to play a fun open world game.
I have never played a previous Far Cry and wasn't anticipating Far Cry 3 at all.
Needless to say, this game, from the first few hours I've invested into it, is phenomenal. While I haven't beaten the game's main story (in fact, I have only done one main mission after being set free), I've done a lot of hunting, crafting, sidequests, and general pirate killing.
Far Cry 3 succeeds where so many other games, and many times shooters, fail: it does away with the portions of gameplay that I don't enjoy playing in shooters and focuses all of its power into the enjoyable parts of any game: killing, exploring, creating, and progressing. Oddly enough, this is a type of review I read on metacritic as well, so it seems others share my sentiment.
Also, the game, so far at least, has never taken me out of the first person perspective. This really adds an immersive level to the game overall, especially during the cutscenes and platforming sequences.
So far, this is some of the most fun I've had all year; Far Cry 3 is definitely a GoTY contender (so far) in my books.
