Subject: Other than LOTR, what is some good fantasy literature?

Eragon series.

Hell yes... I wished that I had read that last one; this series is so good and comprehensive and descriptive that it's orgasmic... Also the storyline is brilliant and paced, which I like a lot, too...

LOTR isn't even good.

This, my dear Flood, is an example of a wrong opinion.

Proud Spartan II, COG soldier, Hero of time, and crowbar wielding scientist.

Wheel of Time, fool.
13, soon the be the final 14th, glorious 700-1000+ pages of LoTR-font-sized books depicting likeable characters, a mature attitude, and plenty description Prn0z.
I'm on number 12 so far. :3

We should know better, because we are better.

It took until the bottom of the second page before someone mentioned Discworld. I am so very, very dissapointed. You are missing out on some of the greatest fantasy literature out there. If you consider yourself even moderately interested in the fantasy genre, you owe it to yourself to read Discworld. I recommend starting with Mort, the fourth book in the series. It has no connection with any of the previous books and it where the series really starts to take of.

To reiterate, get Discworld.

Never say you're bored. Never say you're satisfied with the world. Never stop doubting or questioning things. Always wonder. Always think. But always take time to drop your guard, you don't have to be smart all the time.

Discworld.

Unsuccessfully trying to bring science and reason to The Flood...

Personally for me the best fantasy literature out there is written by David Eddings. I have every single book he has ever written (about 20 or so) and I've read them all at least 3/4 times.

Despite this I have never met anyone who has even heard of him, maybe it isn't for everyone, but it contains brilliant writing, witty, funny and charming dialogue, gritty action, and compelling stories.

My favourite book ever (this one), I would recommend to everyone in this thread. It is crazy good.

I can't understand how you guys actually read Harry Potter and enjoy it at the same time.

  • 12.06.2012 2:57 PM PDT

Eragon and Harry Potter have already been mentioned I presume.

The Witcher?

The publisher for those books sucks ass. They publish the first book. Next they publish the second book in EVERY LANGUAGE BUT ENGLISH. They then release and english version of the third book. Meanwhile the 4th book is being translated into English but its been delayed over 9000 times.

It's an easy and engaging read. The characters are relatable and it's just a classic fantasy story. It's not original (pretty much everything is a copypasta of LOTR and The Worst Witch), it's not particularly great, but it's something you can sit down with and enjoy over a steaming mug of tea.

Don't judge a book by its cover, unless it has bacon on the cover, then it is a good book.

Because it's a fun story that has way more thematic overtones than you would thing a "kid's book" would. Also, some of the best plot twists of all time. Also, really likable characters that make you care when they die (unlike many series today when a character is so annoying that you enjoy them dying).

I was VERY prepared to be disappointed in this forum if nobody said the Wheel of Time before me. Thank goodness someone else knows an amazing tale!

I have the first and second book yet I've never read them..
Then you are missing out on the single greatest fantasy tale ever written.

I'm going to plug Discworld again, because it deserves it. Discworld is a parody of all sorts of genres, and other times, plays the genre straight but with a unique twist. It is roughly split into a bunch of sub series, each starring a particular group of characters. For example, there is the Death series, which stars the remarkably like able Death and his family, while the Wizards series follows the stories of the Wizards of the Unseen University.

Each book usually has a central theme or topic it deals with. Snuff is about racial prejudices and what measure a person is worth, while also journeying through the topics of slavery and detective fiction. Going Postal is a story of how the Post Office must change to fit the world, while also showing the redemption of a criminal. My personal favourite is Reaper Man, a story about what it means to be human and why compassion is necessary, even for Death.

There is a huge amount of books in the series, enough that one will likely deal with a topic you are interested in. I highly recommend getting them.

Just finished rereading The Belgariad for the umpteenth time, I have to take a break once in a while as their style (he and his wife pretty much co-write every book together) gets on my nerves at times especially in the Malloreon. Some all time great characters of fantasy though like Silk, Belgarath and (for me) Sadi.

A Song of Ice and Fire?

Aye.

When you say fantasy, do you include sci-fi/alternative history? Because anything by Phillip K. Dick is fantastic.

The Sword of Shanara- First in the series, love Terry Brooks.
A Song of Ice and Fire
Harry Potter

Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!" - Cave Johnson

Inheritance series hands down
