Okay, I got a new HP laptop, and I installed Halo CE on it, which runs smoother than silk, however, I was wondering if there was a way to install/change it to where I don't need the CD to run it. I've looked all over the place for answers, but it's never mentioned anywhere. So I came here because this is the official site, and I figured someone here would know.

What? Play a game? FOR FUN???
This concept of fun confuses and infuriates me!

Well.. Its legal if you bought Halo PC, and own it. I think.
But I don't advise it. Its kinda nice to have if you loose the CD, but..
I just keep the CD in the drive 24/7.

I bought it from Best Buy back in '01, so it's legit, but I want to know how to install it or change the settings to where I don't need the CD anymore (like when I'm at school or traveling).

no, you need the cd to run it. Any of those hacks so you dont need the cd are illegal. For all we know you could just be installing it for a friend so he doesnt need the cd. see what i mean now?

Halo PC? 2001? No you didn't buy it then, it wasn't out then.

However, what I thought would be the way to run it, which was copying the files off of the disc, of course initiated Microsoft's safety guard, which meant my computer completely froxze. I don't reccomend you try.

Download Halo Custom Edition for user created maps!

The few, the proud, the leet.

You're allowed to mount the image of the drive as a virtual drive if you have the disk.

Guys, don't be dumb, Zeph is right. All you need to do is get a copy of Alcohol, make an image file of the actual Halo CD, and then mount it with the newest version of Daemon Tools. There, problem solved, thread closed.

  • 07.04.2006 7:29 AM PDT

lol

Yeah, make an image file [HALO.img] and mount it with Daemon Tools. Its easier than alcohol to use.

Any modifications to the source code are against the terms of the EULA.

Fair use laws (which allow you to make a backup of any media you own, as long as you don't violate any copy protection) may allow you to use a program like Alcohol, but I'm neither a law nor a Halo EULA expert, so I wouldn't know.

Creating CD or DVD images or using a no-CD crack is illegal.

Under the DMCA, it is illegal to bypass any copy protection on media disks.

lol

My Mum is a Policewoman, ( and my step-dad is a Policeman [ DONT ASK! ] ). I asked her.. she said it's ok, as long as your not making duplicates of the game [which I'm not] and selling it [which again, I and neither you are not] for profit, or giving it to someone else, unless they have paid Bungie directly [ an example.. ]

Its like a music CD. Say you buy a CD, and you burn the CD to another disc, because you want to use it for 1 copy in your car, and the other in your room, for example. That is fine, if you bought the CD legally to begin with. The same with games. You have 2 pcs, and want to play the same game on both PCs.. using an emulator /whatever it is.. is fine. IF, thats IF, you bought the game legally at first, and the money goes towards the game makers. If you downloaded Halo illegally, and the .img file to use the game, illegaly, then that is - illegal. Unless you own the game, and downloaded it from a site which says "only download if you have a copy of the game" - which most legal site say.

Hope I cleared it up for you.

Its only illegal if you sell it on, or give it to someone else who hasn't bought the game legally previously. If you use it for YOUR OWN sake, for a LEGIT reason, then its legal. [ A reason like you have 2 pcs and want to use Halo on both pcs.. or w/e, or say you cannot get to your CD at that moment in time. But you own the game legally.

Please, read the DMCA.
If you bypass any copy protection on media disks, it's illegal. The law doesn't give a damn if it's for your own personal use.

No but your not breaching copyright.

Post a link to an offical site, showing that statement. Then I'll see whats up.

Maw

I was about to do that, but somewhere in the terms of use or read me or whatever it was it told me I had better not mess with that disk. I think I would listen to Goweb. He probably knows more than any of us so far.

And while there is a legal topic, I have this trial of Adobe_____ and I know just how you remove some programming so the computer thinks its full version. No, I haven't done that, I think its piracy. Could anyone who knows tell me if that is legal? I think its obvious.

Making a copy of any software for you're own personal use is legal. It's in every EULA I've ever read, and that's a lot.

Obtaining a burned copy or distributing a burned copy of said software is not legal.

I like to download older games from my childhood like Wing Commander 1, Colonization, Civilization 1, and TIE Fighter. Those games are "abandonware" so thier kind of like shareware. Since the games not in production anymore, you're free to get it how you want.

No, downloading 'abandonware' is still illegal, and the makers of the game can theoretically bring a case against you. It's just that they can't be bothered, as there is no real impetus to do so - no loss of earnings as the game is no longer for sale. 99.999% you'd get away with it, but that doesn't mean it's legal. Like stealing loose change from vending machines that other people leave behind.

Wrong, you need Alcohol to make the image file first.

Okay, everyone, making an image file of your Halo CD will not mess it up. I've been playing Halo this way for almost a year now and no problems have occurred.

And I don't care about the DMCA, this is my own personal, private computer and I can make my backups if I want to. As long as I'm not downloading a Halo image file or uploading my own I'm fine.
