Subject: Halo 4: UI

So, did 343 take the team that designed the awful Waypoint UI and task them with designing the Halo 4 UI? The UI is horrible in Halo 4, it's definitely a downgrade from Halo Reach. Even my friends notice how horrendous the UI is.

What do you think about the UI?

Implying your friends are UI experts that are a reliable source of opinion.

I kind of not like that I have to turn my head sideways to read the names of the people I'm playing with. The rest just seems different and not necessarily worse.

On the Left

Godshatter: I can go all the way with someone without being attracted to them.
CamCamm: How does that work?
Godshatter: I'm easily aroused by anything that moves. It's a curse.
Brain says 'No, that's ugly', body says 'ugly is fine with me'.

Whats wrong with the UI exactly?

It takes some getting used to, but it's not too bad.

Reach had the best UI. 4's is cluttered and it's annoying to find anything.

I don't think you know what that word means...

For the record, I agree. In fact, it's one of the first things I said after I started playing. The worst part for me is that I have a 50-inch HDTV and I can barely read most of the text on the screen from my couch.

The multi-directional menu structure is also a little confusing as well until you et used to it. I think part of the problem is the order of the options. From past Halo games (and other menus in this game), users expect the default action to be the first menu item on the left, or the top. Starting a campaign mission, though, requires you to navigate past two or three other menu items just to hit Start.

It's a big departure from Bungie's UI themes (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), but I don't feel that it's an improvement. I understand that they want to keep the UI consistent with other products, like Waypoint, but I never considered that to be a particularly useful UI either.

It's not terribly bad, but I would prefer reach's UI any day.

Not to mention you can't disabled the awful music until after you start searching for a game.

I feel like the boxes are way too big. I don't know what it is about it. I can't really say what it is specifically that makes it bad. But yeah when the game first came out that's what I noticed. I don't like the huge squares I guess.

I think the options are just too big. Either that or it's not organized very well. I didn't have a problem with any of the previous Halo game's UI. They were all easy to navigate and I was never thinking "how do i get to this option?"
